Hi fellow bird lovers :)

My bird has always had a piece missing from his beak due to another bird bitting the tip off when he was a chick. He has been like this for 20 plus years.

It’s mating and feeding season for him, so he feeds the rung on his perch all day, when doing so he makes repetitive regurgitation movements continually bashing his beak of the perch.

As a result I have noticed his beak has lost some of the red keratin around where the tip was lost and has been shaved away due to the repetitive bashing off his perch. I have noticed what looks like maybe a blood spot where has worn through his beak, or close to the blood vessel. There is no blood anywhere and he hasn’t been bleeding.

Does anyone know if this matter is a cause for concern and should I take him to the vet? I took him to the vet recently and always try to avoid the stress.

Thank you
Andy

Welcome to the forums, @WeeBurkey and your handsome IRN! Please don't forget to tell us his name, will you? Personally I might be inclined to contact my vet for something like that, he might have worn it down and left some internal tissue exposed that really shouldn't be. I've seen whole beaks rebuilt using acrylic or epoxy so perhaps your vet could use something like that just as a plug or a coating over that spot if there was a concern about infection? Mind you if he's a bit hormonal he could wear that away too if he's rubbing it on a perch, but I think it'd be worth having that conversation with your vet :)

Agree. Met a macaw who had a standing appointment for epoxy beak therapy. For unknown reasons he'd rub right side of his beak to the quick. He could go for years between treatments. His owner (a coworker) wore craft magnifying lenses and checked the beak monthly. She had a set date for it. If suspicious weekly checks and pictures. Then to the vet. This was in my pre-CAG days. I didn't understand at the time. I understand now. Epoxy and acrylic for beak repairs has come a long way since then.

Thanks you both and apologies his name is Wee Birdie (I know original), we spell it Wee Burkey because that’s how he says it šŸ˜‚ on the back of your advice I’ll contact the vet ā˜ŗļø

IRNs have the sweetest little voices, I bet it sounds too cute when he says his name! Please keep us updated as to how he goes at the vet 🫶
