Bella the BFA
Hi everyone! What do you do to keep your parrot entertain through out the day when you are not at home?

I am thinking of playing disney movies for Bella when we are not at home... I found that they have this t.v timer that turns the tv on for certain hours and turns off.. but where am i going to find a dvd that will last for 8. hours....

I know they have those 5 disc dvd players but does anyone know if it will play the next dvd once the first one is over?

Anyways tell me what do you do to keep your parrot entertained.

Thanks!

I make toys that I can hide treats in for some foraging fun. Easily destructible toys-like cardboard boxes, paper toys, sisal rope type toys that can be destroyed. Radio or tv for company. Hang treats in hard to reach places so that Foo has to climb/hang to get to them.

Oh! thanks! that gave me an idea. Btw do you leave the t.v or radio on all day until you come home?

I dont go out all that often, but when we do we leave the ipod playing the birds favorite songs. (or you can interpret that as songs we won't mind hearing forever if they pick them up)

Foo isn't really hip on tv, but if she was I think playing it all day would be just as great of an idea, or your timer idea as well.

When I am at school Pumpkin has my dogs in the same room and I can just imagine how much they all talk when the parents are gone! Hehe. I will occasionally leave the radio or TV on. I also make foraging toys for him and leave him with shredding toys because he loves to destroy things. He also has a favorite swing that he is obsessed with. Lots of toys. But also and I think this is the most important especially for new birds, you need to encourage them to play alone sometimes even when you are around. Make sure they know how to entertain themselves. Help them get interested in new toys. It's great to spend time with your bird but you have to encourage independence as well. And this starts when youre home to observe your bird. Take not of her favorite types of toys and what gets her excited and playful. I even have a short list of Pu pkins favorite song that get him head bobbing and screming lol. Good luck.

If you saw my playstands, you wouldn't have to ask.

Plus I've got five. They entertain each other most of the time.

All of mine self entertain well.

Reading things like this always make me consider a second bird. Birdman, do you think if someone works or has school that they should not keep a bird singly? Would two birds in separate cages be better for a situation like this where the human is gone for several hours?

Mine are so spoiled they don't even get caged.

That's very much a depends on the bird situation.

Some birds don't want the competition for attention... and resent the territorial intrusion. There is no guarantee they'll get along.

The biggest thing, to me, is providing them with structured interaction, and a basic routine that they are comfortable with. Do that, and they tend to be just fine, even on their own.

Wow! Your birds is equally spoiled as mine:54: When we are at work we leave her cage open so she is welcome to climb out and explore and even go to her play gym if she likes, but i doubt she will go to the play gym it is stil new to her. I am still figuring out a way to connect the cage to the play gym like a bridge. She has her own room so I am not worried.

This weekend I am placing in a t.v with a 5 disc dvd player in the room. I will also buy a timer that will turn the t.v on at a certain hour and it will turn the t.v off after certain hour as well. I have this ALL PLANNED OUT mwahaa

Each dvd ( planning to put Barney sing and dance, some disney movie, and music. total of 5 disc should be at least 8 hours. We leave the house at 6 so the DVD will be turned on and played the the T.V will be off. The set timer will turn the T.V on at 12 and she will be watching t.v for 1 hour and t.v will turn off again and turn on at 3 and 6. So by the time we come home around 8 it wont feel like she waited the whole day.:54:

hey toy boxes can be fun! We use hanging food cups and hanging coconut shells to put Foo's toys in. then she can go in and toss them all to the floor!

GUYS!! I JUST FOUND SOMETHING AMAZINNNGGG FOR BELLA! So recently I have been debating how I should entertain bella when we are not home. At first I thought about the 5 disk dvd but then you would have to press play everytime for the next movie and Bella obviously can not do that. Then it hit me at work we have this player called ROKU which allows our patients to watch t.v and netflix. ALSO since I have a netflix account I can have a kids t.v show playing episode after episodes! My problem solved. :)

Wood toys and a CD of piccolo music. One of my cockatiels really likes Teletubbies. New kinds of food seemed to fascinate them.
