African grey, Hahn's macaw, Parrotlets, Ring-necked doves
Hello,
I have been visiting this site for over a year now, but I have only just recently joined and started posting. My name is EmmaLee and I am a zookeeper in CT. I have a rescued african grey, Malcolm, who came from animal control (previously a drug bust) over a year ago. I have a rescued Hahn's macaw, Chester, who came from a basement animal hoarding situation, and two ring-neck doves from the humane society (also a hoarding situation). I also have two parrotlet babies. My non feathered animals are two red footed tortoises, and a two year old mastiff, Wendy.
I guess this is both an introductory post and a question. Do any other members here live in apartments while having multiple animals? I am currently a home owner, but my boyfriend and I both recently got jobs in MA. We will be relocating in March, but I am having trouble finding a place that will rent to us with such a big dog (160lbs!) and multiple parrots. Do any of you rent your homes? Do you live in houses or complexes? Is there anyone in the north shore area of MA who can suggest somewhere pet friendly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I feel like I already know most of you, I have been reading your posts for so long. It feels great to finally introduce myself! :)

Welcome to the forum! Hopefully one of the other members will be able to help you out with your question. Just wanted to say hi!

Hi EmmaLee, great that you finally "officially" joined us :D
I have rented many apartments in the past (with birds) and it was never a problem. I can see where the 160 lb mastiff might be lol.

I did notice that professionally managed properties with a leasing office are lenient towards birds. They are concerned about dogs and cats when they say no "pets".
With privately owned rentals, landlords are typically going to be more wary of renting to people with birds, and depending on the individual of course, they may or may not allow a large dog.

Good luck, keep us posted!

Have you thought about listing in any of the apartment listing catalogs, maybe offering to post a larger pet deposit or even hire an apartment locator/placement service/agent.....

Good luck.....

Hi and welcome!! I don't know about your location, but here in NE Ohio you "can" find rentals with pets but the rent is usually higher. Of course it is harder to find these places but can be done. Good luck and keep us posted. I'd love to see pics of your flock!

Welcome, glad you finally "joined" us!

I don't know about other states, but I am a property manager of what is considered a large apartment community in Oregon. We allow birds and have no weight restrictions on dogs. I currently have a 250lb Mastiff living here.

We do charge large refundable deposits and pet rent per pet and have strict rules for those residents who do have pets on the property.

Also in Oregon if you happened to have a letter for your animals from your Dr. stating you needed them as "companion" animals we can't refuse to let you have them or charge ANY deposits or pet rent. That is the law in Oregon, I would suggest you look up the laws about "companion" animals for the state in which you will be moving and if the laws are the same, go have a conversation with your Dr. about the possibility of him/her writing you such a letter.

Good luck!

250 lb??!!! WOW I knew Masiffs were giant, but 250 yeesh!!!

I have not actually weighed Bob, but as big as he is I believe his owner about his weight! He is definitely a LOT bigger than I am!

How long are you looking to rent? You may have better luck looking to rent a house rather than a apartment.

Thanks guys! I will look into the companion laws, see if MA has any. we will also look into getting a realtor, they would probably have a better idea of good neighborhoods, property management reputations, scams, etc. i will try to upload some pictures of my little ones now!
This is Malcolm, my first bird. He went through a lot before ending up with me.

Here are "the peeps" we got them recently, and are still very young. I am trying to get to know them before naming them.

This is Chester. He came with his name, and has recently started stepping up!

These are the doves. Amani, Pace, and Pax. All meaning peace in different languages. The two traditional patterned are a breeding pair, but unfortunately Pace hasn't learned that he needs to help incubate the eggs too. Which I don't mind, I like my small flock size!

Beautiful birds. I have to relocate in a few months myself and am having trouble finding places that will allow more than two animals plus the parrots. Looks like I'm going to live back at home with my dad until my animals are down to two.

Last but not least- Wendy! This girl is a huge animal lover. As part of my job I sometimes have to bring baby exotics home to care for and feed overnight. So ever since she was a puppy she has been exposed to kangaroos, toucans, iguanas, snakes, alligators, and crocodiles. Her favorites have been a blue tongue skink and my red footed tortoises :) she is a little afraid of my grey though, hahah.
