Perches

I have an awesome little BH Pionus. I've had him for about 5 years now and have always brought him perches from one of my local reptile shops. Now I don't know the name of the said perches but he loves them and chews them down till I get him some more (no problem with this as they are cheap as chips). Anyway the shop has now closed down and I cant find these branches anywhere.

So what do you use peeps?

Scarlett's Parrot Essentials is a good starting point for anything bird related in the UK. Great range of products and they're really helpful if you need advise or recommendations.

Usually reptile stores will carry these three woods, you can buy all three online.

Grape wood

driftwood(comes in any shape and size)

And Mopani wood, this is a very heavy wood that's usually light and smooth on one side while the other is dark and rough

Dragonwood works really well. I harvest my own here in Fla. I've sent several pieces to folks in the UK. The shipping sucks. Perches are cheap but shipping is like 25$ on anything. I'll be happy to send you a perch if you'll pay the shipping. PM me the size.And i'll check the shipping rate. Remember bigger package, bigger bucks . For Poi and tiel ,, smaller straight, short, bolt on perches shouldn't cost too much to ship Maybe under 1ft in length. i have tons of that smaller stuff.Heck ,i use it to charcoal the steaks.

Personally I use beech, apple, hawthorn (spikes removed) ask, hazel. There's plent if you have a handy wood near by, being near gatwick shouldn't be to much of an issue hey
I've heard(dunno if it's true) don't use cherry wood. I leave the bark on, gives the bird something to do ripping it up. Just scrub it well

For my birds I use natural perches I collect myself from the local forest. Of course as I have three Cockatoos I obviously need much thicker perches and therefore I don't have many options other than collecting my own. I cut them down to size and then soak them in boiling water for an hour, then I let them bake in the sun until they dry off so that any parasites are dead. I also use Calci-perches which are great for larger birds to chew on.

I have also put them into the oven and "baked" them at 200F for an hour. Works good for "dirty" perches that are still in good shape. Scrub them down and bake them.(Natural perches i mean)

Hmmmm, I go to a farm store to get mine, they have a great selection of good cheep pearches for all sizes of parrots but most bird carying stores have great pearches. I hope this helps!
