I was just on Craigslist, and somebody had posted a wanted ad for finches because she was told PetSmart was going to stop selling small birds. Does anybody know if this is true? If it is, it would be a huge sucess for both birds and bird lovers, due to the awfull conditions birds bound for PetSmart are bred and kept in. ( for more info, youtube 'undercover at petsmart'). It would also encourage more adoptions of homeless birds! Lets hope they finally will stop selling live pets someday!:white1:

Lets hopes so. I also hope petco stops selling them too. They have the wrong information, budgies do not need grit. And they really need to limit how many parakeets in a cage , its really overcrowded.

Sadly I find it very unlikely, I used to work at petsmart and we sold a lot of small birds :(

It might just be the Petsmart at *that* location/area, and not all Petsmarts.

Wouldn't hurt to do some more research into it or calling up corporate?

i wish they would stop and petco too but no they arent stopping :( poor birds with the grit bottomed cages, overstocked, and i hate glass cages it doesnt offer enough ventilation!

Our birds actually come from a breeder, Petsmart does not breed birds, they come from local breeders, though my store (in PA) come from Florida. As far as I know this is not the case in my location.

As for that undercover at Petsmart thing? It's well known in the company and 99% of the stores are NOT like that. That was a setup by PETA, where they got a job at Petsmart and tampered with things and did things against what is policy.

Things have changed in the past 10 years or so as well with the company and almost all of my coworkers are bird people and know the proper care. Yes, there are certain things we have to follow, but we do our best.

We don't give birds grit, and the habitats actually have their own temperature controlled environments, that's why the outside is glass.

Although they're not my favs, our local petsmart and petco are buying at least some of their birds from the same breeder I got one of mine.

My Petco and Petsmart aren't that bad, especially petco. They even take the bigger birds out daily
And they have clean cages. I do feel bad for the skittish budgies though

My breeder told me they would come, pick up all the cages and just cart them off with no regard for the individual birds. He stopped selling to them.

My Petco gets from local breeder. The people there love and socialize the birds as much as possible. They are loving toward them and care for them the best possible. Though the conures tend to bond to the associates. Which can be hard to adopt them out to first time bird owners. They set up a weekend every month for bird information classes to help educate people on birds. And offer help anytime after purchase.

But I understand that not all petcos and pets, arts are the same. I'd love to see pet stores not selling birds. I'm grateful they adopt out homeless cats from rescues and don't have puppies either!

I don't know about Petsmart, but my local Petco has suddenly majorly discounted all of their conures. They started carrying all kinds of parrots (mostly conures) within the year (GCCs, suns, jendays, nandays, black capped...also sengal parrots) but none of them have sold, for months and months. Some have even been there since March...
I don't remember where, but I heard Petco might stop selling conures altogether. Here's hoping...their cages at my local Petco are awfully small.
