I'm trying to get an eclectus to be situated in my hotel lobby. What do you recommend a playtime or dome top cage? Thanks

hi! eclectus can be timid and can be stressed by too much activity or loud noises near their cage. it is for this reason that i would advise against getting one. i think another bird such as a conure would be a better choice. that being said whichever bird you get, i think you should get a dome top cage and plenty of toys. if he/she had a play top cage, some guests may disturb or try to handle the bird with out knowing how to handle it, and they could be bitten. good luck and best wishes :)!

I would choose a dome top, a play top is fun and they do like it but if your eclectus gets scared and flies/flutters it can land in the path of a person who isn't paying attention and be crushed.

I much prefer the flat top cages over the dome ones. I think the are more servicable & you could also put a play area on top.

Ann i can't believe you have advised against Mitz getting an eclectus. Is it because of experience or what you have read. I can assure you a well trained eclectus is a joy to have. They are by no means timid nore do they stress at the slightest noise. Eclectus would have to be the most calm, laid back parrot i have ever owned. I would say they are bomb proof. They are easy to care for, all they need is a healthy balanced diet. I don't have any health or behaviour issues with any of my birds & if i do see a problem arise it's dealt with immediately.

Pedro,

I respect what your saying cause you've owned and raised Eclectus a lot longer then I have. And you have a lot more too....lol....But from my own pair and the ones I've seen in the area, they're skittish....I guess it all depends on how they were raised in the first place. Like my Cockatiel babies that I brought to the bird fair, they climbed up everyone and everyone kept coming back to see them. But all the other breeders' Cockatiels aren't like mine, some of them even bit me and drew blood when I was helping them. I've had a lot of visitors coming into the house and my ekkies have been unpleasant with strangers every single time. If you were to place your finger on their cage, Gracie will try to bite your fingers off. But when it's just us, they're both just the most loving birds ever. But I do understand they're adults now so a youngster is a easier one to get into a new situation like that then a older bird. But I still say to hold back from the lobby until the bird get to know the new owners prior to be exhibiting to bunch more strangers. After all, we don't know how the bird was raised in the first place.

I would go with flat top cage as well so a play stand can be placed on top!

I believe an Amazon would work a lot better in that type of environment than an Eclectus. They thrive on activity. If henpecked could respond, he's much more knowledgeable than I am about amazons. But I have seen more than a couple in similar situations and they seemed to love the attention and activity. My male Eclectus on the other hand does not.

Thank you all for your responses. I take every comment and learn from it. However, I am set in an eclectus and the breeder I am buying from only raises eclectuses in a quite neutral area. Now I'm not too sure how many people are around it but Pedro also sold an eclectus to a hotel and my breeder also sold one to a Doctor who takes his bird to his practice everyday and it does well there. Both sold me on getting an eclectus. Pedro I appreciate your help as always, Mike your feedbacks as always are very helpful and I also value the rest of the comments made by other members. I thank all.

Now the tough decision is between a dome top or play top. Because Ann can be possibly right, what if it glides off or customers try to handle it (even my family and I are at the hotel desk all the time throughout the day).

I completely respect your opinion, you have allot more eclectus experience than i do :). i wrote what i have read and what others have told me. at the time i posted this, i wasn't aware of the intent of the owner or the full situation the bird would be in. i posted on another one of his threads about getting a conure, but i also agree with you. i think an eclectus that is properly raised and socialized will do great with Mitz, now that i know the whole story. i just think it depends on the individual bird. thank you for clearing that up :)
