Green Cheeked Conure: Kiwi

Pacific Green Rumped Parrotlet: Peeps
Hey everyone i'm having a huge problem here with Kiwi. I went out of town for 8 weeks working for a friend and I didn't take Kiwi or Peeps. I have 6 bro's and one sister so they were definetaly kept busy. But when I got home I got the terrible news that Kiwi is really starting to screech. :( I've tried ignoring it and I thought I was doing ok, but really, it does NOTHING to ignore him. He'll eventually shut up but then just starts back up again. This isn't a 24/7 deal, but he's waking me up int he mornings because I guess he wants to come out. My rooms downstairs and we only have a small window so they're away from all the activity. (but this is the only place that they will fit room wize) Just now he was screeching when I was gone and now as i'm typing this he's eating and all puffed up and very very quiet. Should I reward him when he's quiet. I used to train my bird Peeps with this training program I got him, should I start training Kiwi to get his mind occupated? As i'm typing this it's a beautiful day out(and I take them both outside)so everyones outside, do you think it's just because he's really lonley? I'll admit that he definetaly can't stay in one spot as long as Peeps, he's very ambitious. He has a really huge cage but he dosn't seem content in it, maybe I don't have enough toys? I don't have enough money to buy him more and more and more and rotate them every week. :( Please please help me in this area, i'd really appriciate it.

Welcome to the world of conures. :)

It makes a difference what kind of conure you have. Some are noted to scream much more like the blacked capped and sun. My GCC is so so quiet. These birds need lots of attentiion and love. So that means lots of one on one time with you out of the cage. Being you were gone (flock leader missing) he most likely became very stressed. You will have to make it up to him with lots of lovin and attention.

Oh woops i forgot. I have a yellow sided green cheeked conure.

I think if he is all puffed up & quiet is it possible he is unwell. Keep your eye on him as they can get noisy & bity if they are sick. Just a thought. To help him through this consider putting him on some probiotics if he has a little stress related bug that will help his immune system fight it. You should be able to get some from your local pet shop or on line.

I know my little hen gets the screeches up from time to time but she usually shuts up after a short outburst.

We had this problem and the trick we used was to take a chair by her cage and when she started to screech we sat down with a book and started to only mouth the words. When we did this the first couple times she didn't really respond but then the would come down to the bottom of the cage to see what we were doing. When she came down that's when we would say"ohhhh what a good girl you are". This then broke her of her screaming.

when my conure screams i put the radio on for her, she loves it and goes quiet.

My Sunnie will screech just because she feels like it, my Green Cheek never used to screech, but since we got Ruthie, Sky has picked up on the screeching, and will do it for attention, for fun, because he wants the dogs to go away, you name it and they screech, especially when I walk out of the room. This lasts about 2 minutes and then quiet. The only other time they are really loud is when they try to keep up with our Amazon Oliver, the 2 conures mimic him and try to be louder, which only causes Ollie to be louder, which makes for a loud...REALLY LOUD...10 or so minutes twice a day.
Although I must say I have neighbors who never say a word, and my wife and I actually like the sounds the birds make so we do not try to discourage it too much, as it is not a constant behavioral issue.

You know now that you mention it, Kiwi has become kind of nippy lately. Do you think I should take him in? I'm so bummed though cuz our vet sucks as far as birds go, they do like no test for them and just go by what the bird looks like.........

Yes he is puffed up sometimes when he does it. I thought it was just his "happy" chirp but you think it might be sickness huh?
