Pomegranate Fun

With Venus' very busy and active day, I let her "help" me in the kitchen. I bought my first pomegranate today, I've never had it outside of prepared juice drinks but thought I'd give it ago after reading so many posts about it. I put Venus on the counter after I had quartered the fruit. Then like I read on line I put a quarter in the water, released some seeds and put them in a bowl for Venus. She LOVES it! I had to give her, her own quarter and while I worked on the seeds, she went through her piece like a buzz saw. It was fun seeding pomegranate together lol! She was so focused on it, it was THE thing that kept her attention the longest.

I laced seeds in Venus and Buddy's chop and WOW!!!!! Adding pomegranate to the menu!!!! As for me, not in love with the taste so much but the activity with Venus was fun. And what a mess after, lol.

I love giving Parker a pomegranate half. He tears it to shreds. He needed to be coaxed but it's one of the few fruits he completely enjoys. That and cooked mini pumpkin halves

This morning I drug Husband to the farmer market. I bought 3 pomegranates for $5.00, which was better than the one I bought last week for $2.50. As soon as I got home I placed slice in Venus' and Buddy's bowls. Venus went to town removing the seeds, making fast work. I love watching her tear it up. Buddy, not touching it, but this the first time I've given it to him as a slice hoping he'd forage and pull the seeds out. I pulled some seeds out of his piece, nope still not touching it. I put seeds in my hand and offer my hand to him and suddenly they look delicious!!!!!! He ate them all. I'm hoping he will start shredding his piece soon.

I sliced it into six giving each 1/6th. Too much? She decimated it. Buddy I had to remove the seeds then place the seeds in his bowl and he choked down. We are heading out so I changed their bowls out and left some Rowdybush pellets. They won't get pomegranate again till Monday at the earliest.

Ohhhh yes! Until last week I had never touched a pomegranate and didn't know how to cut it, serve it, etc. So I looked it and found instructions to cut the top off, then cut into quarters. Place a quarter in a bowl of water and work the seeds out of the white meat/membrane. The article said working the seeds out under water made it easy. Well Venus didn't need water, lol! She popped the seeds out like they were nothing! After reading more and watching Venus, a bowl of water is not necessary for sure.

I'm intrigued. Do they eat the seeds? I've never had a fresh pomegranate, since it looks like a lot of work for a little fruit pay-off. Do people eat the seed part, too? Or just try and get the fruit pulp from around those gajillion seed pods?

Oh don't worry, I'm learning too. Here is a similar article to what I found. There are lots of ways to remove the seeds and I find them easy to remove. The juice will stain porous surfaces like Formica. I use my glass top stove surface, easy clean up. The juice comes from the seeds and you can eat the seeds. They are sweet with a tangy taste and my birds love them.

OK, after reading this I had to go out and buy a pomegranate for Loki. I cut a piece off and set it in his dish to work on and watched him. Typical Loki behavior, he gave me the stink eye as he tried to figure out if I was trying to poison him or not.

Ok Loki, I gots things to do....tick tock. Not interested? OK, I left him to stare at it a bit longer and went to clean up my mess from making breakfast. Took me about 7 minutest total.

When I got back I was shocked. It looked like something exploded. There was red pomegranate juice EVERYWHERE. Not a single seed left. He must have decided to give it a try and then decided MORE!

Its kind of like giving a small child in a high chair a piece of cake and then stand back and watch the mess happen.

Thanks for the great idea. (now do you have any tips for cleaning up pomegranate juice?)

Hahahahahaha! Yep, they love their pomegranates!

As for cleaning it? Preparation. And for the sake of your own sanity, don't cut it open on your wooden cutting board! You'd think it was a dye!

ROTFL!!!!! I just saw this Weezerj and laughed out loud, Husband looks at me and says "What?" I explained and he shook his head mumbling "Buddy", lol, my GCA's name. I swear pomegranate is bird crack. I don't have wood prep areas in my kitchen, I have Formica, glass and stainless steel. My first pomegranate prep experience was on the glass surface, however when Venus eats it, it's like a bomb went off, red stains everywhere. Good stuff! I'm glad you gave it a try as well as Loki, LOLLLLL!!!

Oh lord, stains. Pomegranates have nothing on tamarinds (cactus pear) and red passion fruit. Parker's playstand has a wooden perch and it is permanently stained because of these two fruits.

Exactly! That's an outdoor food around here. With an old towel on your lap... switching back and forth between birds, and just letting them dig in and make a mess...

NOT ON MY WALLS OR MY CARPETS PLEASE!

Then use the towel on their little beaks and faces before they rub it on something impossible to clean.
