Apparently today I rushed S'mores to the vet when I noticed she got a fever. I was soo worried. As the vet examined her, he did some blood work, she just had a cold.

Got her on some medication and she's doing better. Yay!! Happy ending :D

But then, he noticed something though and when he told me, my heart dropped. She has cataracts in her right eye. She's possiby going blind in her right eye.:(

I was upset but the vet told me, the bright side is that I'm lucky it wasn't both of her eyes. He's not sure what the cause is. He thinks it's genetics because when he looked at her eyes, he said it looks like they've been there for quite a while.

He's doing more testing to rule out any diseases, so I have to wait for him to call. GRRRRRRR!!!!! I just hope she's ok. I mean, as I'm looking at her, she's seem the normal keet she is and one she does that I realize why she does. whenever she needs to see something important, she turns her head to the right (her right) and looks with her left eye.

The vet said that if it's from a disease, she might be able to see again when we get her on proper medication, but if it's genetic then we could do surgery. But I don't think I'll do surgery. She seems fine and plus, I don't have the money after what I just spent on this vet trip. But if you guys think I need surgery, then I'll do it.

As for her fever, it's going down :D (Sigh of relief) Bartleby was worried about her next-cage neighbor. She was freaking out. For now, they're in separate rooms and Bartleby's going for a check-up next week just to be sure she didn't get anything from S'mores.

Hopefully people learn from this story to always give your birds daily check-ups for diseases or illnesses. Because once they show symptoms, it might be too late! Birds are very good at hiding illnesses.;)

Ap, I'm so sorry to hear that. That's so sad. :(

I'll keep you in my thoughts; please let us all know the outcome.

How did you pick up on the fever? Did she just feel too warm? I was reading about cataracts in birds. Greys are more prone than other parrots. You did good getting bird to vet so fast.

Spiritbird, I was going to ask the same question! How did you know she had fever? Did the vet take her temp? I definitely would not put a keet through surgery. They are very sensitive to anesthesia. I agree with you there. Unless she is in pain it can probably be managed with drops.
I'm glad you got her right to the vets!

Thanks for all the wishes guys! Hopefully her results will come in clean!!!

SB and Grey, when I was holding her, I felt her feet and they were really hot. Vet said she had a temperature. I held her this morning to give medicine, her feet wasn't as hot. So, looks like she's feeling better.

Yeah, I don't think I'm surgery, besides it's only one eye, so she'll be fine.

Hoping for good news on this! You are such a good guardian to get her to the vet so quickly.

As for hot feet indicating a fever...well our birds get hot feet and hot beaks when they're happy or excited. Sometimes Jade's are nuclear. I don't know that I could tell using that method.

Thanks. That's the first time I felt her feet get hot and I was worried. And it actually turned out to be a fever.

Mishka's feet are often warm, I guess not "worried" warm.
When she is on her playpen I have noticed they are warmer than usual.

BUT I will still be keeping an eye open, checking her thoroughly daily

Beau has hot feet in summer and cold in winter - even with the heating on lol. I guess you would just know if you know your bird well.

Poor love I hope she will soon be feeling more like herself again, bless her. You are a good parrant for getting her checked out apatrimo.

OK Dr Ap it is then.

Awwww, I'm blushing. :) Vet called, S'mores is all clean. So her right-eye blindness is probably hereditary. Looks like I have a blind one (at least in one eye) Is it possible for her other eye to become blind too since it's genetics? And if she ever has problems, what are some things I could do to make her life easier, if anybody has any experience or knowledge on blind birds. Thanks for everything everyone!

So happy S'mores has a clean bill of health.

I recall seeing posts previously about birds with one eye.
Will surf the net, pertaining to birds with one eye and is it possible for the other eye to become blind too since it's genetics
