My Orange winged was very strange tonight....

My son's future step-daughter, age 9, came to visit....Sammy started going crazy when he saw her.

would lay on his perch and flutter his wings, stare at her and kept yelling hello. Don't sound like a problem right? then he made his way to the chair she was in hopped on back (it is close to the cage) ,he was dancing and singing and repeatedly yell "hello" "pretty bird" and climbing her arm. kept trying to get right in her face area. when I tried to move him for fear he may bite, he flipped out. snapping at me. I have been the only one able to hold him period in our house so this was strange. he was turning in circles , spreading tail feather, standing as tall as he could, lifting wings, all kinds of things I have never seen him do. also this is the first time he has ever saw that child.

it was amazing how he was acting, he flew from his cage as they were leaving trying to get to her. When he landed in the floor he literally ran toward her. I had to stand in front of him to try to stop him. the whole time he was trying to get around me.

I got him into his cage and he was still flipping out, that tail spread, yelling hello, squatting til he looked to be laying on the perch. during all this, his eyes are pinned. a steady pin.

Do you know if these guys see color? she had on a very bright pink shirt. don't know if that got his attention or what. He never even looked at her sister which is 11. So im thinking it is not that he just loves and trust kids.

I love that he let someone else show him attention but I would love to understand what was going on with him. I took some video. will try to post some to show the behavior vs. trying to explain it which I am probably making confusing.

at one point when I got him to the cage he walked down to me because she was standing there with me and he actually tried to bite me, well did bite but nothing severe, when I reached for him. He was wanting her. lol.

Can any one of you help me understand this? This was totally a shock

Yup they see in color and some species see color spectrums we can't, like UV. Lol it sounds like he was totally smitten with her! He was trying to woo her (lol!) and didn't want any interference. You got a real Romeo on your hands haha :)

thanks Kalidasa....

he was just weird acting like that. lol Funny but weird. lol
He has never had a single thing to do with anyone else. ever! lol I just didn't know what to expect cause 1) he is my first bird 2) this is the first child he has been around since I have had him 3) I am still learning daily to try to understand him/read his body language

I wish I could tell ya about the way he was acting but I cant. I gotta try to get a video up here somehow. I could never explain the show he was putting on. lol A romeo he must be. My husband was shocked too, he has never let him get close.
Oh I forgot one thing, Sammy even kept dropping his head for to to stratch his head too....

That's the reaction your looking for when picking out a pet amazon or "letting the bird pick you". yeah that happens with especially younger zons. The older ones will too but to a lesser extent. Even my older ,very bonded hen will sometimes met someone she goes crazy for. it usually doesn't last long and is usually someone who resembles me. In one of your earlier threads i said .. the more relationships they have with people the less polarized those relationships will be. you have a young bird who is meeting new folks and sometimes he'll meet someone he "clicks" with.

I'd say it sounds like a classical display of love!!

Two words: AMAZON CRUSH!

It happens. It is not logical. It's just love (infatuation) at first sight...

Yes the child was def favored by Sammy. He was trying his best to get her attention ! Watch out or she will be stealing your bird's affection away- LOL

You're actually lucky to have found someone your bird likes in case he needs babysitting...you'll know he's having a good time :)

thanks HenPecked,
so ya think maybe he is young? I have been trying to get an idea of his age. the last house he was in had a granddaughter in it that is the same size, age and hair style as the child from last night. he use to "dance" with her as she stood in front of the cage. maybe that was the connection.... it was nice to see him so active and alive, lol

my husband told me the same thing last night.....lol

I have been trying to learn his behavior. Read a lot about that tail feather spreading thing and was worried it was a bad thing. he was really showing off those colors.

Well, they either really like kids, or they absolutely DON'T! There are very few in betweens...

My 40 year old re-homed multiple times lilac crowned amazon has a thing for little blonde girls - like the 7-10 year old variety. In fact, the first time we realized this one was when a neighbor's kid walked by the tree with the birds outside, and she flew down out of the tree, and landed on the little girls shoulder, and did the full on amazon happy head bob, eye display, happy noises thing...

I am guessing that at some point and time, she was very bonded with a little blonde girl, and is still looking for her person...

Those are the only people she has ever sought out - THAT WASN'T COOKING!

IF YOU HAVE FOOD, YOU ALSO HAVE HER UNDIVIDED ATTENTION! :D
