Gollum - Senegal
Hatch Day- 5/8/15 &

Dobby- Indian Ringneck
Hatch Day- 7/16/15
I brought Dobby home Saturday. She is a 3 month old IRN.
My only exp with birds is Gollum (5 month old Senegal I have had 2 months (ish)

There are a few things I noticed that are different and I am not sure if they are normal for IRNs.

Her neck twists around a lot further, almost owl like. She will turn her head completely upside down and look around. When I first brought her in the house, she stared at the ceiling. I thought maybe there was light reflections or something up there and didnt think much of it. Then I noticed a couple times a day she will do the head upside down thing and look around.

Her feet are much bigger than Gollums but she doesnt seem to grip as well. Then I remembered when Gollum first came home she was the same way. I had to hold her feet to help her keep balance as I walked around the house.... Now she could join the circus with her capabilities.

Her beak doesnt feel smooth. It feels a little rough and up by her nares seems a little dry maybe? Also when she beaks me it feels like her bottom is thin. (again comparing to Gollum) Like someone who has thick fingernails pushing their nail against your skin would not hurt like someone with really thin nails doing the same thing because it would feel sharper? I dont know if I am explaining that well.

She stinks. I remember Gollum had a off smell when I got her too. I thought I just got use to it but I am thinking because Gollum showers (soaked) 5 times a week, she doesnt have that smell anymore. I have taken Dobby in the shower with me each day ( I know it is soon) I soaked her both times and she still has that smell.

She is already playing with toys. She steps up for everyone in the family. She has the most beautiful yellow ring around her eye. The sweets little peeps every once in a while (which I know will get louder). Right now she is shredding the wood ladder like she is on a mission!
Pics are not that great, cell phone pics as usual. I wanted to show you the beak. You can see ridges in one pic

I forgot to mention she wont eat with her foot. Gollum did that from day one I brought her home. She doesnt pick anything up to chew on.
She preens a lot. Now Gollum may preen a few minutes a day (and possibly at night after bedtime). Dobby preens more than she doesnt

My goodness she's so sweet! Reminds me of when Shiko came home. Shiko wasn't articulate enough to hold anything with his feet, let alone even DO anything with them... I still remember him trying to run along the ground and face planting. It was hilarious. He also couldn't grip anything for awhile, and to this day he only uses the minimum amount of force needed to hang on.

The smell thing concerns me. It could be a yeast infection, so I would take her to the vet to find out.

As for the beak, I do think it's just a difference in species. Poi's have BIG beaks. IRN's have small, almost fragile beaks thickness wise but they look like big honkers on their face. The nare area looks normal to me, Shiko's is the same. Consider it the cuticle around the nail for comparison. Sometimes it looks a bit rough, but over time and with care it evens out.

Preening wise - also normal. Both of my birds preen quite a lot, but never once have I had plucking issues (thank god). They also spend HOURS preening each other.

If you can, please do take her to the vet. After being handfed, birds can develop a yeast infection and that's what creates a smell. It's relatively "normal", but if it persists for too long it can be so hard on the system and it can really dwindle development because their little bodies are fighting the infection.

Thank you. I will be taking her next week. She is sweet. Gollum is not impressed and wants to get to her... I am sure it is not with good intentions! lol

Hahaha! First time Avery and Shiko interacted Shiko quite literally bit her on the butt. He wanted nothing to do with her... and now they're inseparable. It may be different with a Poi in the mix, but who knows? I hope they at least learn to tolerate each other [emoji6]

She just looks so sweet in those photos. They grow up so fast and their personalities just flourish after awhile. I'm sure Gollum is just angry because mom's attention isn't solely on her anymore [emoji39]
