I purchased a prelit fake tree for Christmas and while setting it up I began to panic. Will the heat from the lights release fumes from the tree frills? It's one of those little ones from Walmart. I was going to put it up a room away from the birds but just wanted to check first.

Good question, and I'm not sure about the fumes. The thing that would worry me would be the possibility of the bird (if flighted and adventurous, like ours) biting into the lights/electricity.

If it is in another room, I wouldn't be too worried about the fumes--if it is not meant to have smells my guess is any fumes it lets off would likely dissolve quickly. I doubt it's more harmful than anything else that is cheaply made, and we can't avoid having some of that stuff in our house. I might keep the door to the room shut, though, especially when my bird was out. My mother has a lit fake tree, and I just kept my girl out of "the Christmas room" while we were there, mostly for the reason Rival said (I just realized I know Gail and Rickeybird's name, but I don't know the hubby's--I think that R-bird is winning the fight!) ;) I'm no expert, obviously, but I think you should be okay in another room.

They most definitely won't be allowed near the tree ROFL. They already are knocking decorations over :). My Gcc is the Grinch this year.

Agreeing with Puck (and you) about another room.
And I answer to Rival or Kirby, and a few other things. :)
