We went to the vet today and had wings clipped and beak and nails trimmed! I believe he clipped my cheech's wings wrong! He tries to take off and falls straight to floor and is having a hard time navigating his on his cage now! Will everything be ok and how long before he's normal again!

Call your vet and ask if he cutter shorter than usual. Post pics up here too so we can have a look

Well... I mean, he did just get his wings clipped, which near eliminates a birds ability to fly (for most birds that is, some birds have very strong wings and can still fly a ways). It's pretty normal when you clip their wings for them to seem clumsier, because they can't jump as far now (can't use their wings to help) and balance might be a little off as well.

Well when I first got him his primary feathers he said that was wrong and clipped his secondary feathers! From what I've read their not supposed cut to the point of the bird falling straight to the floor cause injury can happen?! I just wanna know how long does it take for secondaries to grow?

Oh and being that I rescued him he doesn't yet trust me to handle him like that yet!

Oh :( he may have clipped them too short but a normal clipping does not eliminate their ability to fly. My grandmothers African grey flew away a few days after being clipped. Luckily she was found 5 days later by a neighbor

Im sorry to both of you. It will be awhile for them to grow back, BUT he should be able to navigate a little more easily in the next few days, once he gets used to the way things are.

I agree that once he gets used to how short they are, he will likely be way less clumsy.

First off... why was the beak trimmed?

Second off... why were the secondaries trimmed?

Third.... can I strangle that vet? (forgive me if I'm angry at what this vet has done!)

The secondaries should *NEVER* be trimmed because they don't actually control lift - the primaries do. If both the primaries and secondaries are trimmed, there is a higher chance that your bird will injure him or herself because they can't break their fall. The only time one may want to consider trimming the secondaries is to slow a *flighted* bird, not to ground them... and this is something entirely different.

If your sun conure is young and he has a healthy beak, there is no reason to trim it. In fact, trimming it may potentially cause it to grow faster, although I have no proof that it will. There's just no reason to trim a perfectly normal, healthy beak - and beaks can be very sensitive parts of a birds body, so should only be done if required. If not required, birds may stop eating, particularly if a nerve in the end of their beak was hit.

It can take anywhere from a few weeks to a year for clipped feathers to regrow, and it all depends on what part of the molt cycle the bird is in and when that molt occurs.

Please, can you get us some photos of the wings stretched out? The fastest way to help a bird recover from a bad clip is to either imp them (inserting grown feathers into the clipped feathers - requires knocking the bird out) or pulling the clipped feathers (can be extremely painful, bird *should* be knocked out during the procedure). Short of one of those, it's just a waiting game to wait for those feathers to molt out and be replaced with new ones.

In the mean time, please place down blankets, pillows and other soft things for your sun to land on!

Here is what a proper macaw trim should look like. This is my boy Kayko both after and before trimming so you can see what is feathers did look like. Trust me, Kayko was a real flier at 20 and I have consistantly kept him trimmed for the past decade after he slammed into the sliding glass door at 25 MPH. How he survived that one I will never know. Clicking on the pictures will enlarge them.

Believe me if I could get a pic of stretched wings I really would, but I may loose a finger! Lol and for the life of me I can't figure out how to post a pic on here! Slowly thru the evening he had gotten a little better! His beak was trimmed because it was way to long! The woman I rescued him from had 200+ birds he was in a cage with another sun conure no toys no calcium stones nothing! It took him 2 weeks befor he figured out what a toy was and more than a month to sit on a perch, but slowly but surely I'm gaining his love!

U gotta watch these vets, make sure if u dont want your bird flighted that u state "u don't want them falling like a rock"

The vets my conure and eclectus go thank god they cut them good my they can glide downward. watch ur birdie dont let him fly their breast bone can be damaged this happened to my friends parakeet she let Banfield hack her keet and he fell like a rock a couple times because she let him out. The keet got a bleeding wound on its chest from falling so now her keet must be caged for 3 weeks. She was trying to avoid the vet office fee and a 20 clip fee Banfield charged way less.

My advise to you would be to cage your conure, I cage mind for 1 day at least and dont allow them about the house. I also do not allow them to perch on my finger or arm and walk around with them. I make sure i hold them close to my chest (cuddling) when walking around with them right after clips if i want them out. This lets them get a bit used to their new wings and nails.

Forgive me but I thought your conure was only around a year old... and if his beak was too long, chances are, there are health problems.

Typically, the only reason for a beak to overgrow is due to a poor diet, failing organs, mites (highly uncommon in conures), or a damaged beak. Sometimes due to a lack of things to chew, but this is not common. At only around a year old, if the beak isn't damaged, I can't see any reason for his beak to be overgrown.

I'm even more interested in photos now and I wonder if the sun really is around a year old, or if this bird is in fact a sun.

When u open to post there is like a file button down arrow to the right of the smiley face

there will be (Fonts, Sizes, a color pallet, smiley face then the file icon) click it and a new window will pop up then upload the photo that is on ur computer

Kayko's expression is so cute here! :D

Thank you for rescuing the bird from what sounds like an unhappy and unhealthy neglectful home.

How long have you had him and what had you observed before the clipping? Was he flying, trying to fly? If not, maybe the grooming brought his attention to his wings a bit more and he's trying them out. If possible, put a cushiony blanket or towels on floor around area where he is crashing (in cage / on floor) till it stops.

He was flying and was able to circle the room then back to his cage! We have had him since the beginning of September! He is doing so much better!

I'm pretty sure he's a sunday conure! That is, a sun x jenday hybrid. He's got the looks of it! His face says "jenday" to me even though it has the colors of a sun. Wings are pretty dark green with spots of yellow (typical of hybrids), and he's get the stomach of a jenday!

Kind of like this guy! (although he has more color to the face)

Suns have an yellow-orange stomach where-as jendays have a red-orange.

Cheech is very pretty! And I can see a little of what you meant by a long beak, but it hardly looked that bad. Glad he's doing better now!
