Hello all, I recently adopted an 8 year old mexican red headed amazon. He has fatty liver disease, a large fatty liver tumor, and he plucks. He doesn't have a good prognosis, but he is amazing.:21:

Oh bless you for adopting him! Pics please!

Here are a few pics, will post more . His name is paco. He is the best bird, quiet(kinda lol), sweet, well mannered, and he eats well. I hope he improves and stays with us as long as possible, but if not, he'll be happy here as long as possible.

Oh he looks so sweet! Congratulations! What can you do for his liver if anything?? Is it mostly diet or is he on medication?

Awwww....Paco looks like a real sweetie! Whether he has another year or another 50+, I'm glad he found a loving home where he will receive the best care possible. Hopefully, you and your vet can figure out a good dietary/behavioral plan that makes his existence at least more comfortable. My parents have had their Mexican red head for 40 years. Barney is the sweetest, most laid back parrot on the face of the planet. Barney has some health issues as well, some sort of strange genetic thing where he lost all his head feathers except the red patch (he looks like a green turkey vulture), and last year he had a stroke. He's been a real trooper with his health issues, and hopefully Paco will be too! Amazons are real hardy, strong birds, so Paco may just surprise you by living a full and happy life :-) Keep us posted on him.

Thank you so much for taking in this little guy that needed help:). Hope to see more updates on him and I'm sure with sme love and care and proper food you can make that prognosis a little better:).

Thanks for giving an older zon a new home. Wow ,8yr old is kinda young for liver issues.I'd look into getting him a product call "Sunshine Factor" it's a vitA supplement made from red palm oil. I too have some older rehomes with liver issues and it seems to help. I also feed hemp and milk thistle seeds and sprouts. The toughness of amazons will amaze you, i have a Pan hen who was supposed to die last year from the same issue , she has her good weeks and bad but is still with us.

Bless your kind soul for taking Paco in.
Pray he will be with you for many happy years

He's so handsome! What a sweet face. What recommendations were you given regarding his fatty liver disease? I don't know anything about this in birds, but I deal with it in human patients all the time! Is it likely caused by obesity? Poor diet in the past? For people we recommend weight loss first and foremost. Just wondering about birds, too.

That was very nice of you to get him, someone who is willing to care for a bird like that is obviously a brilliant parrot parent :)
