This is the first time I am getting hardwood refinished so I am not sure entirely what it entails, but I know birds are sensitive to fumes/smells and what not. My house is a ranch with a full basement. The bedrooms are carpet, but the living room is hardwood and is adjacent to all the bedrooms and it pretty much encompasses the center of the house. My questions are:

*Do you think it would be safe for us to stay in the basement?
*Should we vacate the house for a few days? (I have family nearby that will let me crash at their place)

I'd appreciate any guidance you guys can offer - trying to plan as best as I can before the refinishing gets started.

I would 100% go elsewhere until the floor is done and until the house has aired out afterward. Fumes travel through a home and impact birds on separate floors. You are smart to plan ahead!
If you stay at someone's house, you probably should have a conversation ahead of time about Teflon and general fumes/cleaners etc (that's why it's sometimes easier to stay w/ family...) Bring your own cleaners and cookware if theirs isn't safe and maybe ply them with wine so that they don't get super annoyed :) haha

You could also consider boarding (it has risks too, but I wouldn't chance it with the floor).
