hi everyone!! we have a new addition to the family~ happened to walk past a bird store and see this poor lil guy in a really bad state:( i suspected scaly mites coz her/his face was all crusted up nails were real long. the lil fella is so skinny and was lying on the cage floor.

we asked the store owner what was wrong with the fella the answer we got was just…...:20: he said that this was normal moulting~ when we questioned him further he conceded that it could be because of an itch caused by the budgie lying on the dirty cage floor. both answers were not very accurate in my opinion at least:54:

we then decided to buy her/him and immediately went to an avian vet to get some help!:)

well it was scaly mites as i suspected as well as feather mites. and quite a serious case, her(i'm thinking its a gal though the cere is crusted up quite badly so i can't tell for sure) toes on one side are all gone coz of gangrene and the other side may never grow back too:(

sorry for the really long post but i'm just really mad at the shop owner but at the same time glad that we could save her! now i'm just feeling really sad for all the other fellas with her in the cage….they probably have mites too:(

at the vet's getting her nails trimmed

oh yes, any advice on her diet would be appreciated too! i'm under the impression that budgies need more seed in their diet unlike other larger parrots? is this true? and now i'm feeding a self mix of millet, canary seed, quinoa, ground harrissons and roudybush, egg food. i'm also offering sprouts, fresh fruit & veggie. she has yet to touch the fresh stuff though!

poor thing,i never have seen it that bad.
The budgies i see in out pet shop, always have scaly mites, but never this bad, they are always sold that soon.
When i used to have budgies, they got a mix of organic seed mix and pellets.
From what i know they are suckers for the fruit blend pellet for supreem.
I bought a bag to get them onto pellets,i hadn't even turned or they bomb-dived right in with all 4 off them.

What a precious baby she is. I'm so glad you saved her! I bet that bird is going to love you for the rest of her life for this. They truly do 'understand' when we help them. Best of luck, and I look forward to hearing about her progress.

I am so thrilled that you saved her! Poor little girl, I have never seen anything like that, and to think she was in a pet shop like that and they called it moulting:(
Please keep us updated on her progress, and kudos to you for taking her in and saving her life:)

OH. MY. WORD. that poor poor baby!!!! [emoji33] thank you SO much for rescuing her and giving her another chance at life!

Does she seem to be eating ok?? As for the fresh stuff maybe chop it up tiny or try making a mash- try it different ways and be persistent...she may try it eventually! Or sprinkle some millet seeds on top.

oh that's so sad, that they let her get to that state, pet shops have a lot to answer for. aside for them who scaly face business, she actually looks like a really pretty little bird, with the whole yellow to green stomach. good luck with her!

Good job :)

Do you have any sort of management authority for animals where you live? Someone you could report the pet shop to? I know if any pet shops in my area had budgies like that, they'd be closed down.

OMG, that's awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can not believe they would allow the poor baby to get that bad. You need to get a vet record and bring it to the attention of the owner of the pet shop. IF they continue to do business like that you should turn them in to someone.

I'm glad you have her now, although the damage is done from the ignorance of the shop, she will have a better life staying with you!!!

thanks for everyone's concern for her!!:)

she is eating corn and sprouted seed in addition to her dry seed mix so i am quite happy already!

i've also written to the relevant authorities and hoping that they'll take action of some sort.

Thank you for the update, I was wondering how she was doing:) Hopefully they will take some sort of action on the store, as this is blatant abuse and neglect.

her new cage!!

It looks a tad overgrown, but I think the right food and a cuttlebone and she'll probably take care of that herself. If it doesn't get better in a few weeks, you may have to trim it or have the vet to it.

I can trim my dove's beak myself with a sharp nail clipper (he's old and he has a touch of that crossbeak thing) but I've never tried a budgie.

What a marvellous story about a poor little birdie! Does she have a name yet or are you still thinking she might be a little boy? I'm glad she's eating and just love the cage setup you've made for her. I do think there's a special place reserved in Heaven for people like you who save animals from such awful situations. Bless you and thank you for caring for this little one. She's a treasure for sure! :D

She is already looking so much better! And what a great cage and set up for her, she truly must feel she has won the lottery. I am so happy to have an update:)

All I see is RED !!!!!! :mad:This is why I have insecurities for buying supplies at pets shops , I'd MUCH rather give money to trusted , online bird stores than THESE buisnesses . I'm really happy you got her though , she must be really happy ! Beautiful budgie !

Look at that sweet setup she has!!!! I LOVE the pink cage- and it even has hearts on the doors [emoji7] lol

I bet she feels like the luckiest budgie in the world!!!

Does she have a name yet? I vote for the name "lucky" or "sprite" because her colors remind me of lemon/lime
