Hi there everyone, I really hope that someone out there can help me. About 4 months ago I brought a very shy 4 year old orange winged amazon called jasper. Thankfully he has come a long way in that time and from the timid reclusive bird that he was, he now spends all his time out of the cage, accepts treats from my hands and is starting to mimic sounds and says hello and alright. However he is very afraid of initial hand contact and will not step up, every time I try he simply runs away screeching I would be gratefull of any suggestions thanx. :green:

It could be that your bird experienced some kind of trauma related to human hands. AD is right in stick training. You just use a short perch and teach the step up with that. After a while bird may not be so fearful of your hands. Jasper will slowly learn to trust you.

thanx for the tip should I try this with him in or out of his cage

The stick is used in place of your hands. I would not go into the cage just now until he trust you more. If you want him to come out of cage just open the door and wait for him to step near and put the stick to him as you would your hand. At first he may not understand what you want but with all parrots need our patience.
