I feel the plastic ones fall apart after a few years..I like the metal ones better and before it hung mine ..I boiled it..just in case I guess...I use a lot of caution, since my Amazon passed in May. Buying in bulk isn't a bad idea, that way you can change it up when they get dirty.
 
Hi, there is a pretty good topic on dyes somewhere in here. Sorry am at work and have to pretend I am being useful! The basics, food dye and alcohol mixed.
Also, take a look at PVC end caps. Hot glue the rope into it run a screw thru the cap and you are in business! If you don't have a glue gun, use wire wrapped around the end and attach to the screw.

I've had bad experience with the plastic-ended ropes. For some reason they fall apart very quickly, probably because I wash them too often :)

I agree, the plastic is terrible. My small green cheek, smaller than most, was able to tear one to bits. Still not sure how to get a hold of safe materials however I will continue my search.
