Hello everyone. i recently came across rose breasted cockatoos and i really like them. I have no plans to get one naytime soon, but i would like to know more about the breed. so i have a few questions, what is a good diet for one? how loud are they? and what size cage is needed?

My previous parrot was a rose breasted cockatoo (we call them Galah's here in Australia). Unfortunately Cooper got very sick and didn't recover but I had him for 18mths and he was certainly a character.

He loved affection & attention and we bonded very quickly but he was very demanding and destructive and if he didn't get his way he would scream very very loudly!! He had a puzzle toy where he had to work out how to get wooden blocks out of the holes and would throw tantrums when he got frustraled with it..... just like a child.

Deit was very easy - he ate anything, fruit & veges, pellets, whatever we were eating. He loved foraging on the ground so I would vacumm before letting him out - we have a flock nearby that spend every afternoon in the park up the road on the ground looking for grass seeds etc.

As for a cage the bigger the better, they are the smallest of the cockatoos but like most need lots of entertainment so lots of toys = room. The biggest complaint with him would have to be noise and destruction. Also I had very limited knowledge on training so I think if you get one consult an expert if you are not sure what your doing to discourage bad behaviour.

Oops you are right I meant to say smaller... sometimes my brain and typing are little out of synch. thanks for the stern correction

Hi Birdman Are you still looking for a bird or did you find one? I have been wondering. You are so lucky to live in the land of pretty birds. Just open your door and one will fly in!! Just kidding.

get this, theres a guy selling a rose breasted cockatoo with cage and supplies for 470.00!!!!! i seriously considering buying it

Can I suggest you ask him why he's selling esp if that's a cheap price (not sure where you live and what they go for in your area)? You don't want to take on someone else's problem without being aware of what your in for.

Good Luck

i live in NJ, they go for about 1,000.00-1,500.00 here. he sai dhe doesnt have time to spend with him

WOW!!! You need to move to Australia they are around $300 here :rolleyes:

As long as you are prepared to put in the work go for it. I don't know if you can get any Australian plants there but I forgot to mention Cooper LOVED native flowers & leaves esp bottlebrush

Keep us posted on the outcome

I'm jealous...:)

Australia has always been on my list of 'places I want to go before I die'. I want to see it so badly.
