Female Eclectus-"Roxy"
I haven't written in a really long time, I have been really busy. BUT I knew I had to tell everyone that Roxy laid her very first infertile egg last night at around 9pm. She is an SI eclectus and will be 6 years old on June 1. Now this caught me very much by surprise. She showed to changes in behavior in the days prior, other than she molted quite a few feathers last week. It was only within the hour of when she laid the egg that the signs were obvious. I am always VERY careful not to give her anything that could be nesting material, and if she does end up near pillows or dark places I immediately get her away from all of that. But nature has its way I guess! Here is how it transpired:

I was holding her and she was rubbing her head on my shirt, which she does all the time. But then she climbed onto my stomach which I don't really like. So what I usually do is knock her unto the couch and use a treat to get her to step up right away and put her in her cage. Well this time she was very adamant about digging under a pillow. She was running back and forth from one corner of the couch to the other and it took me longer than usual to get her to step up. At this time it was around 8pm, and I desicded to put her to bed early. So I covered her cage. While it was covered I could hear her running around on the bottom and attacking different parts of the cage cover. I left her alone and jumped in the shower. 5 minutes later my fiance knocked on the door and told me Roxy was making wierd squeaking noises. So I jumped out and checked on her, and wouldn't you know it, she was in egg laying position. I got very nervous because I have heard of so many complications, and it did sound like she was struggling a bit. But less than 2 minutes later, she was done and there sat a cute little egg! She seemed exhausted and a bit confused, but she sat on it all night. I will be leaving it in there for 30 days until she realizes that it will not hatch.

One thing that really surprised me was here demeanor. I thought I would not be able to get anywhere near her, but the next morning she climbed right out of her cage, and I was able to pick her up and move her to her tree. I then put a towel on the bottom of her cage and put the egg on top of it, so that it wouldn't break. Bird Paradise told me she may lay another one or two eggs in the next few days. When I put her back in her cage, she ate a little bit and then went right to the bottom and started nesting in the towel. I will let her get it all out of her system. I can't help but be proud of my little girl and proud of myself that the egg is solid and was passed normally, and that she is not attacking me at all. (Yet) I will keep everyone posted!

I'm glad she made it through laying her first as it can be complicated during their first. I'm able to hold Gracie too after she lays her egg. She wasn't aggressive at all. :)

It's so funny watching her because she doesn't entirely know what she's doing haha! She still goes up on her swing once in awhile and sometimes I will look over and she's not even sitting on the egg, but it will be a few inches away from her lol.

It take them a few times of practice to know what to do. But she'll figure it out soon enough. :)

She just laid egg number 2! Ironically, she laid it exactly 3 days later, to the exact hour.
