Near where I live back in the UK there is a pet store that was prosecuted a few years ago for selling illegal exotic pets- monkeys and slow loris etc. Now it has re styled itself as 'The northwest's parrot experts' and they are selling parrots.

I went in yesterday out of curiosity as I was looking for a cage (I didn't realise at the time it was owned by the same people as before). All the parrots there are in a deplorable condition. They're in tiny rusted cages with poop caking the bottom, all in terrible feather because they're on a diet of nothing but sunflower seeds and peanuts. They are miserable.

They had a lovely female Ekkie callled Bonnie who was terrified of everybody walking past. Next to her they had a gorgeous, well-feathered male, who was eating a grape and saying 'mmmmmm!' after every bite. I was talking to him and heard one of the girls talking to the owner saying 'she tried to bite me when I tried to pick her up'. I asked 'are you talking about this bird? This is a male' to which she replied 'no, she's a girl'.

I said 'I don't want to be rude, but this is a male. It's a male solomon island eclectus, they are always green and the females are always purple and red like Bonnie'. She didn't even realise he was the same species. Apparrently he had just come in that morning, someone had surrendered him. He had a bald patch on his head as though he'd been plucked by another bird, i wondered if perhaps someone had gotten him as a second bird and gotten rid of him when they didn't get along.

He looked like such a happy gentle boy and I'm miserable now thinking about what he's going to become in that awful place :( I'm flying back to Canada today but my first stop when I move back will be that shop to see if he's still there. Unless any forum members live i the northwest and would consider rescuing him!

Here's a link that might be able to help the ekkie.....

Good luck.....

it's really sad to see this is happening. if not because of too far, would def do something to help

How very sad, thanks for trying to help. I hope both the Ekkies find wonderful homes with caring people. Please let us know what happens.

That's so sad, poor birdie. I wish I could help but I definitely couldn't take care of an Ekkie across the pond! I wish people were more stern about how they treated their animals in pet stores...

Aww, sad. Too bad he had to go to THAT pet store instead of a rescue or a better home :( Hopefully he'll be into better conditions soon, but if not he'll be waiting for you when you get back to the UK :)

This sucks such an unfortunate thing. I wish I could help out in any way. Hopefully someone like you notices him and gets him out before damage is done.

Awww how heart breaking =( I visited the bird "specialist" pet shop the other week and they had a few Eckies in and it broke my heart! They were all fed free range of a parrot mix consisting largely of sunflower seeds and peanuts. Meanwhile on the way home i stopped in at a large chain pet store and their bird section was incredible! Huge cages full of toys with fresh fruit and veggies available to birds who all looked happy and in great condition.

In Canada I find pet chain stores disgusting as they're usually real puppy mill type places, but in the UK the chain stores are usually the only trustworthy ones and it's the independent pet stores that treat their animals badly

Over here they are ridiculously over priced but they do get in puppies and kittens/cats from SPCA to re home and their birds seem to be in good condition. They often only have a few perches and an old well used toy though.

Thought I would update everyone on the situation at the petshop.

I contacted the Parrot Society UK since they had a representative for the area the shop is in. He has assured me that he'll forward my email to their head office and the society will push for the shop to be closed down and the licence revoked. I assume the birds (the two ekkies along with two CAGs, two GCCs, a big mac and many budgies and finches) will me assimilated into shelters across the country but i have asked him to keep me updated on what becomes of them!

Great job! Far too often we observe terrible situations and are powerless to affect change.
