Hi! We are new Quaker parrot owners and want to know how to protect our little guy from household items. I know Teflon is dangerous.. but what is recommended for a disinfectant.. for the cage or for surfaces the bird uses the restroom
On? We have kids and of course want to keep them
Safe from
Bird poop!

Honestly, unless your bird is sick with something serious (such as psittacosis which is a zoonotic disease) their poop is generally harmless to humans. Unless they're immunocompromised, it's the kids spreading germs to the bird you have to be worried about :p

Anyways, hot soapy water or F10SC veterinarian disinfectant works as a disinfectant.

The best disinfectant is F10-SC or disinfectant/cleaner F10-XD. Very economical to use. Need a spray bottle for dilution and application.
For poop I use Poop-Off to clean it (not a disinfectant).

I LOVE F10 SC! (It's cheap too, once mixed up with water per directions)- get the yellow/clear kind (not the green stuff w/ added detergent--that stuff is safe too, but it has to be rinsed off, as opposed to the type I would recommend).
It seems expensive, but when you do the math, it's cheaper than buying 13 gallon Windex refills...and makes just as much.
It's a pretty solid disinfectant---not quite as good as bleach, but bleach is SUPER dangerous, whereas this is completely safe.

I like the green....just rinse it off after 10 minutes.

I imagine the green would be good for cleaning cages etc, but for counter-tops, toilets etc, rinsing seems like a lot of hassle.

We just use it on bird stuff.

I figured when you said that--- I use it to clean my house, as my old disinfectants are a no-go. I know it probably seems weird lol--but hey--- its pretty versatile.

Since we're talking about this, we know that there is a difference between cleaning and disinfecting and I would contend that one needs to clean things as well as disinfect them. The detergent in the F10-XD (green) aids in releasing the "dirt", including dead bacteria, so it can be washed away when you rinse the item.

I have been intending for some time to get the disinfectant for those times that I just want that but haven't gotten around to it [read lazy].

I agree- I try to use a lot of friction...lol....You are right though--at least, it seems logical.
