Toby the double yellow headed amazon
OK, so I had been wanting to get my amazon Toby a perch/play stand thing to get him out of his cage to see if maybe training him would be easier with him out of his cage.
We have had him for a couple months and still doesn't step up but I know this may take some time.
So I took everyone advice and instead of buying a fancy $200 stand I got a $40 piece of fancy twirly bird wood and hung in from the ceiling with some toys and mounted some cups and stuff and I put it near his cage so he could get used to it. To my surprise, he climbed right out of his cage and hopped on! but now if I try and even go near him or his fancy wood he become very aggressive!
He lifts his wings and does the scarey head shake and hisses and honks and fans and I'm somewhat scared he might just off if i get too close and bite my face or something!
He eventually went back in his cage after a while but now he is just as mean in his cage and is being very grumpy and I just dont know what to do!!!
HELP!!:greenyellow:

Grumpy, cage agressive Amazon. Could be lots of reasons. He is fairly new to your home is this correct? You need time to build up trust. My Rosie is very cage agressive and we just live with it. I put a perch in the inside of the door so she steps up there when I open the cage. Then I give her time and she will eventually be comfortable with a step up. As you have make the outside of the cage attractive to him. Know what his fav. treats are to have in your hand. Also make sure he is getting 10 to 12 hrs. of quality sleep at night. That means no noise from voices, music or TV. It is a good idea to have a sleeping cage in a quiet room for him if you need that room for your evening activities.
Hope this helps.

Sorry if I missed it in another thread, but how old is he?

I would not approach my amazon if he was putting on such an aggressive show as yours was. That would not be wise. Is it possible that he is hormonal? Depending on his age he might be going through sexual maturity.

I got him used :) and they said he is about 8 so he is probably still a bit hormonal and I understand that, but he is usually a generally pretty nice bird, he has been a little grumpy but never like this and he sleeps plenty.

And hurricane I love that picture it's soooooo funny, it is just like Toby.

:D Thanks, he's silly.

Is the stand that he is on above your head?

ETA: Sev gets awfully brazen when he is peering down at me.

It is at about shoulder level, and I was thinking it was probably too high, I think we are going to find a little end table or something and make it be the other way so it lower and we can move it around.
