Screaming At 2:30 AM

I wonder if sheets of trimmed plexiglass or something might be slid in to block her whenever she's out, and then removed whenever you have company? Probably a pain to properly set up, but I bet it would be well worth it for the anxiety and aggravation it would save.

Wow. She's in full out nesting mode, huh? Just try a swift sneak attack strafing run to grab that shredded paper next time that she goes up to her food dish to eat! Lol! Just be swift though, my friend.

I have no good suggestions about your particular problem, but I wanted to chime in about her under your couch. I'm assuming since it's one of those huge L-shaped couches it has a pull out bed and/or a recliner section. Just be sure she is not under there when you pull the recliner or any other "pull out" section out...I know of 2 different instances where a bird was killed almost instantly because the person didn't know it was under the couch, and they pulled the recliner section's foot rest out, and the bird was crushed underneath...one was a friend and it was awful, just awful. It was a dusky conure and he still hasn't forgiven himself years later.

This might just sound like a newbie idea but I have been an owner of dogs for a long time at least. Can you block her off from the couch? Put something under there so she can't get under the couch. Or maybe a blanket draped over to make it look different. Then maybe she won't have such a hankering to get under there and start baking. LOL

Thanks for all the recommendations for blocking off the couch, and Billdore, all questions are good. Right before thanksgiving we bought a new couch, an L shaped sectional that is larger than our old furniture. It also sits higher and has a 6 foot ottoman that makes it into a bed, lots of nest space. Now I'm going to have to remember to think like a hen when buying furniture in the future, lol.

I like Stephen's plexiglass idea and I'm considering it. Right now I refuse to let her on the floor because she is very hormonal and talk about an angry bird, see the pictures below of her last strong hormonal cycle when she was in the same temperament. This time she has been extremely cage aggressive where before not like this. The past two days she's been trying to nest, no egg yet and she's not eating as much but looking to me to feed her, bobbing her head with her beak open.

I'm not trying to scare anyone but when she is hormonal, look out! And after the last gashing in July I have been making sure boundaries are set so attacks can be avoided and minimize her hormones where possible but she hit puberty this year. The gashing was from when she broke into Buzz's cage and was standing beak to beak with him. I reached in and told her to step up before a blood bath started between the two of them and she got angry with me and started attacking me. My doctor's office remembers now that I have birds lol!

The last picture is from a sneak attack on the floor.

as a new parrot person I have got to ask is this something I have to look forward to ? it looks like your bird hung on in those pics. there has got to be a way around that for you as it must hurt your heart more then the wounds do. have I just been lucky and not had any of my buddy's bite me yet. Sammy struck at me twice when we first brought him home but he was stressed 2 moves with new cages in 4 days no problems since but I watch him very closely when he is out as he will never have my full trust with that weapon he carries.

my plan has been if one of them ever clamps down on me is the grab it by the upper beak covering the nostrils and going from there taking the air should make them let go. get the towel and get em back in their cage, never push it and figure it out from there? sound like a good plan?

something I do also is I will observe the birds for a bit prior to letting them out and if they seem a bit off or out of sorts they just stay in till all looks right.

I sure hope no one takes this post the wrong way as my intent here is to
just figure out how to cut something like this short happening with my buddy's .

thanks

Excellent questions, no one wants to get bit but it will happen. It's important to watch body language. The bite on my foot and wrist was from Miss Thang sneaking up on me and attacking. The hands from when she was beak to beak with Buzz trying to avoid the two from fighting. Now I keep a dowel perch I removed from Buzz's cage after replacing it with a real wood perch. I use it to make her step up so there is no contact with her. Big help!!! I also tell all three birds no if they act like they will bite.

She did bite deep and hard. I went to the doctor because swelling started even after I washed and disinfected, and there was a bacterial infection starting. So I did a round of antibiotics and got a tetanus shot so if you get bit make sure to keep an eye on the bites.

Also Mark, Birdman666, taught me a great method on a thread. Use two fingers and push the beak away. That's not his words verbatim but it does work, it's gentle and they learn.

Oh and I had to walk away and calm myself I was so angry at Venus. Well angry and hurt because she bit me so yes she hurt my feelings lol. But we're good again.

Instead of plexiglass, use plywood strips cut narrow enough to fit under the couch. Use some kind of simple brackets to hold them together! When not needed, lay them flat and slide them further under, out of sight! If you get fancy, you can easily match them to the floor and make then semi permanent!

The only two times the Rb did night screaming were when we had mice...
Is that a yucky possibility?

OMG! So yesterday the temp dropped to 34F. I walked into the garage to do laundry and while standing at the dryer, and I started the dryer, a mouse zipped out from under the dryer. EWE!!!! The last mouse ever in my house was when I was a kid! Mouse traps are out with peanut butter on them. I think it came in thru the dryer vent, it's on the ground. Trust me, I checked all cages again, around cages, kitchen, corners, looking for evidence inside the house and found nothing. I'm hoping it's only in the garage and it's not staying.

Ouch ! Now I know I am glad Salty is smaller then an Ekkei! But, sadly I do recognize the shape of those parrot 'exclamation points' .

The Saltyboy just nailed me 4 nights ago, when I deigned to remove him from his roosting place early to go to bed.

Tracy, try some simple MDF boards cut a bit shorter than the opening (height) Either hinge the sides for easy removal when guests come, or just use a few L brackets to secure the sides (squared off U shape). Doesnt need to be flush with the front edge, can be pushed back a few inches.

You have my sympathies! I got nailed for the first time last week---with no provocation too! He had a perfect toddler tantrum, threw all his beads/toys to the ground, then jumped down to the floor growling and tossing things. Dumb dumb (me) reached down to pick up a bead and the little monster marched over and just bit me, hard! Still have a mark. but boy did he want to cuddle up last night...down in the 30's and we dont have the heat on yet. Funny how I cant touch him during the day, but he's all in for neck scritches under the covers at night. Monster is the polite word for what i called him.
