Tate ~~
White Capped Pionus -
Violet ~~ Yellow Naped Amazon - Jupiter ~~ Baby B&G Macaw (coming soon)
Hey everyone. My question is regarding my Pionus - Tate. He is almost 1yr old and he's been a great little guy since day one!

Shortly after Violet (Yellow Naped Amazon) came home, however, he's been acting differently. The only thing I can attribute it to is jealousy. He's not old enough to be going through the hormonal changes.

I try to be fair and give each one equal attention, so I'm aware that each needs special attention. They are in separate cages (obviously lol) that are very close to each other in the same room. I don't have any problems with them fighting unless Violet sneaks over to Tate's play gym in which he quickly scares her away with a charge and open beak.

The real issue here is Tate's attitude and aggression. He is A LOT more cranky and bitey. Seemingly out of nowhere he'll go for me feathers flared and beak open for a bite. I know he knows it's wrong because he goes right into his cage afterwards knowing he's been a bad boy. It almost feels like he doesn't want to be that way, but doesn't know how else to communicate his jealousy of the other bird.

Anyone have any suggestions or experience with this? I want my little lover back. He's still sweet at times, but more and more he's just cranky with me. I want him to know he is still my little love and that doesn't change just because a new bird has joined us.

Thanks!

I rescued two amazons. I personally think the parrots get jealous. I've noticed that if MC is hesitant about stepping off his stand - he changes his attitude immediately when I walk to Secret's cage with the treat. Secret gets jealous if MC gets attention from visitors . . . . MC literally turned his back on a bunch of visitors once when they went to Secret's cage because Secret was yabbering at them.

I'm having issues with attitude from Secret right now. Didn't think about this - but maybe it's the jealousy issue coming out. Cranky would be a "minor" word for Secret's attitude right now.

Can anyone chime in with how to fix jealousy?

I know they get jealous. My wife and i both have hen YNA for pets. One stays upstairs, the other one stays downstairs. We don't let the other see anyone get attention. They're fine so long as they can't see the other bird getting "their" lovin. I 'd say the conure needs more one on one time with mom when the zon is out of the picture. maybe side by side is not the best place, just my .02 worth.

I second this. It's a little bit different, but my cat has been acting differently since bringing my conure home. I can only put it down to jealousy. Therefore, I try to interact with my bird and cat alone without them being in the same room. It's quite a chore but it seems to be working.

They'd get jealous. Elvisnwouldnbute the heck outta me if anothernbird tried to get close and last week I was handling an amazon Gomez with Erin maybe 10 ft away and we cuddling and he said his first word right then there "uh oh" we had Helen saying back and forth untilmjealous brat Erin screeched to let me know she had enough of my playingnwith Gomez and then Gomez was either being spiteful or jealous because as soon as Erin screamed he looked straight at her and his eyes pinned and he latched on to my arm! Very very painful and now I have another birdie scar... birds can he very jealous.

Mine both get so jealous of eachother! As soon as one becomes cetnre of attention the other starts screeching and misbehaving .

To try and limit this we now have some time every day which they spend together but they also get their own private playtime alone where they cannot see the other bird.

At least then they seem to think they're the centre of attention more than the other.

Thanks for sharing everyone. I feel better just knowing that's its pretty typical... I've been giving him some extra attention and violet doesn't seem to mind,so ill keep working to assure him he's still my little baby.
