Sleep Cage

So we have a small house and i want to make sure my baby gets enough sleep.. I am thinking about getting a portable sleep cage that i can move to a unused room if i have to but the baby to sleep and we are still up in the living room. The cage will not be moved after the bird is in there.. but some nights we hang out in the living room and i dont want Apple to miss out on her rest.. what size cage is a good one for this.. She is double yellow head amazon

I would get her a sturdy travel cage made for parrots, never get a pet carrier for dogs or cats. They can 1: chew through plastic or 2: if it is one of the cages to put dogs in when you are gone, has zinc that kills your bird. Make sure when you pick out a carrier, it is large enough to flap her wings, and put small food/water dishes in for night-time snacks, not to mention enough room to be comfy. I"m not too sure on the size but you will know when you see it. Hope I helped!

By having her in the living room is just fine for all times even if your up late watching movies and such. She's not gonna miss her sleep, they will nap throughout the day. I think most people are too critical about this. They will adapt to new situations!!!! I don't have a set schedule when I go to bed but I work during the day so I stay up pretty late and they stay up with me. None of them miss any sleep.

I agree with Mikey. All 4 of my fids are right next to the living room. I cover their cages when it's bedtime, and within moments I can hear happy beak grinding.

If you still want a sleep cage, I'd get one that's around 18 X 18. That should be more than enough if it's only used to sleep in.

I'd forgo the sleep cage as well.... I have my bird cages set up in the living room area and if need be I will put a cover over them to make it darker, but I honestly haven't even needed to do that in awhile. They will still get their sleep with the tv and talking going on.

I just don't think it's worth the expense and confusion to the bird. I would imagine it may disturb their sleep more to be in an unfamilar room in a different cage and no one around, but that's just my opinion... : )

Merlin has little to no routine, other than the fact that when mummy gets up, it's day time. When mummy goes sleep, it's naptime/bedtime.

If it's a particularly 'late' night, we anticipate some grumpiness the next day. But it's usually resolved by giving him a nap time (or let him do it himself if he's home alone).

Same here, I'm for no sleep cage. Our schedule varies throughout the week and both Bosley and August do just fine. August goes to sleep when he wants, cover or no cover. Bosley begs for his cover and will sleep contently even if we are up watching TV.
Sometimes they need a few more naps the next day but all is well.

I have a sleep cage, but it isn't in a different room. It's a little square parakeet cage (my bird is small) that I keep a blanket over and which sits on the floor next to Leonard's day cage. I also use it for time outs and when I have to do maintenance on the other animals' habitats (because he will scream otherwise.)

After a couple days of putting him in the little cage at night, he began putting HIMSELF to sleep in there at night. When I am home and awake, the door of his cage stays open, so he is able to do this on his schedule.

Another added benefit is that it keeps him quiet much longer into the morning. In the big cage, even covered, he woud start yelling at 5 or 6 am when my parents began getting ready for work. Now he stays quiet until 10.

I think whatever you decide, your bird will get used to it.

I have a sleep cage, Rio goes in it at sundown and settles in for the night. She wakes me up about 8. She likes to peek out under the the cover, helloooooooo it's adorable.

Wings made a very good point. Instead of a sleep cage what ever amazons needs is a good travel cage. A cage that fits easily into your car for vet trip,running to town, family trips,etc. you need to use everyday around the house so they get accustom to it and are comfortable in it. My pet zons have no issues being in their travel cage or sleeping in their travel cage. I often put it on top of their home cage and let them sleep ,play or what ever.Including your zon in family activities helps to socialize them to many new situations and makes for a much happier companion parrot. You both will be so much happier and able to do so much more (enjoy life). IMO if you want to truly enrich your companion's life,get a travel cage and use it.

Oh yes travel cages are so important. I actually use 3 different ones.
I have a fairly large one for sitting out on the front deck. And 2 other that are great for the car and outings.

So I called the breeder when I saw you guys post about travel cage.. the bird is being shipped to me through delta in a traveling cage. So I will have one of those.. and the bird should be use to it... I plan on taking my baby out a lot and socializing her.... I want to take her in my back yard but I am scared.. so many tall trees

The shipping crate your breeder is using is not really a good travel cage. It's more of a plastic pet crate. . if you saw the thread about unrelated yellow napes, the SS cage in the pic would be a good travel cage. Also good for sunning your baby in the yard.

Funny... Rio was in her cage in the living room, the door was open. The sun is down, the birds outside are quieting down. It's 7:55, I walked up to her cage, asked her if she was ready to go to bed. She came right up to me, stepped up, I walked her in to the bedroom and she went right in to her sleep cage. She cooed at me and I covered only the corner of her cage because its a warmer night. By now I am sure she is out like a light.

Shyness, to get one of the cages, pm ther person witht the cage and ask what the model is. Afterwords just do a google search for one for sale
