My roommate bought some produce soap, and I was wondering if it would be safe to clean Bob's cage with. I know it is safe for human consumption, but not if it is ok for birds. The ingredients are:
Water
corn oil
palm oil
coconut oil
citrus oil
sodium citrate (a natural derivative of citrus fruit)
glycerin (from coconut oil)
grapefruit seed extract

Anyone know if this is bird safe?

Every ingrediant looks like its on the safe list. I've seen coconut toys. What is in citrus oil? any preservatives?

I know its odd, and a lot of people dont really like the Idea of soap, but Dawn dish soap is gentle on birds (if theres any left over on cage/toys) and rinses clean, I love using it on cages, it works, it smells clean after and you know its not going to harm anything or anyone in your house.

So if you dont have Grape seed oil, you can use Dawn. I even use it in fish tanks cause it rinses so clean. (hint, RINSE rinse and repeat, for fishtanks)

I would be careful and perhaps ask your avian vet before using this product as I have never heard of it and have owned quiet a few birds in my lifetime .

I don't use soap. I have one of those hand held steam cleaners that I bought off of one of those shopping channels. It heats up the water to like 220 degrees, comes out with a little force and even has a little scrub brush nozzel. It makes cleaning Tiki's cage sooooo much easier. I give her cage a thorough cleaning at least once a month. It sparkles once I'm done with it. She seems happy with my job.

It is sold in the produce section of supermarkets here for washing your vegitables before eating them. I will ask the vet.

I am not sure what fruit(s) citris oil is procured from, but due to the fact that this product is inteded to be "eaten" by people I'm pretty sure if it contained preservatives they would have to be listed on the ingreadants list.

@mtdoramike
I saw one of those for sale the other day, I should have thought of Bob and got it.

@xreinx
I use Dawn on Bob's food dishes. His cage is a bit large to be easily washed with soap and water and so I am trying to find something I can just spray and leave in the cage to evaporate on its own once things are wiped down nice and clean.

a mix of Grape Seed Oil and water, or vinegar and water, always works for me.

I talked with some experts at a rescue down the road from me and they said it would be ok if it's muxed with water and rubbed, not sprayed.

Where do you get grape seed oil?

at any health food store, Ive walked by it for years before I relized what it was, and its called Grape seed Extract, it comes in a oil or caplets.
