I'd like to start making some bird toys, and I know Balsa and Basswood are both fairly safe woods for birds that are well enjoyed, but I'm worried about getting wood that's been chemically treated for carving when ordering bulk balsa or basswood blocks. Does anyone have any suggestions or sources they know are safe?

No sources just: the few experiences I have with well dried balsa is that is so soft even I can break it easily. Not much challenge for a larger beak. ;)

I asume you want sources near where you live?
(It would be nice to know where on this planet you are at)

Find the woodworkers near you- they know all the best places to buy!
Every woodseller worth his salt will tell you what is done to it (or not).

I have purchased both Balsa and Basswood from hobby shops, as it's used for model making. Michael's Crafts has a pretty good selection in the back of the store with the models and model supplies, as does Hobby Lobby.

Also, if you want to order a larger quantity or are specifically looking for Basswood, you can order it cheaply online from most guitar Luthier supply shops, as many cheaper guitar bodies are made out of Basswood.
