I talked to a lady today who is trying to rehome her dyh. The interesting thing is that the bird does not talk. She has had it for the past 6 years and has not heard anything other than parrot noises. She was told that if a bird has not been talking by 3 years of age, it will never talk. Is this true?

I feel sorry for the bird and have been looking for a dyh for a while now. Is it possible if I got it, it will pick up speech from my other two birds?

If anybody is interested in the bird, here is the ad. The price is very reasonable.

Double yellow headed Amazon

I think that all parrots can learn to speak at any age, however just because they can doesn't mean that they will. I know when I rescued an amazon that was older she did learn more words after she got here however she didn't use them often. He is gorgeous however!

beautiful bird I would say go for it :)

Older parrots are capable of learning new things, and that can include imitating speech. But not every parrot will talk; many never speak anything but their native parrot language. Such parrots still make wonderful companions. :)

Well the other thing is that the owner said the bird really prefers men.

I almost brought a can home that was 36 years old. I was told that he only liked men. Well, he liked me. I was one of the few people that could handle him. Don't always believe what they say. Sometimes the bird will click with someone and it doesn't always follow what they liked in the past. Do remember however that the way the bird acts when you first meet it might be very, very different than how it will act in your home.

They can learn at any age it just depends in the bird if they want to.
The happier and more comfortable they are, the more they choose to.
