Okay, no one is allowed to laugh or say they got seasick watching this.... No clue why, but I decided to try this by myself and halfway thru realized holding camera with one hand and demonstrating with the other is probably not how many cooking shows are taped :)

You can use sprouting jars and bags, but I have found the trays to be the easiest and least likely to have issues with rancid sprouts or bacteria. Just so easy to clean and use, completely rinse clean. But that is just my opinion, you can try any sprouting container you like!

But the thought and intent of hopefully this being helpful is there!!

We went to Wegmans yesterday and I checked out pricing for the lentils and peas that I had purchased in the 'regular' aisles versus those of the same thing but packaged just for sprouting. I paid no one then $1.78 for the 1 lb bags of peas or lentils (pea were the most 'expensive'). I found lentils for 98cents a 1 lb bag. Here are photos of the shelf stickers so you can see the crazy prices for the 'sprouting' items...

The chick peas / garbanzo peas I purchased were $1.18 a lb bag, here is the price for an 8 oz pouch of sprouting...

Again, the peas were the highest at $1.78 a lb bag, but the sprouting peas for an 8 oz size...

And lentils were were 98cents for the regular (greenish/brown color) and I think $1.18 for the red lentils... mixed lentils for a 4 oz sprouting pack... sorry, that one is a horrid pic....

So onto the video... get your popcorn, its long and boring... and done one hand on camera phone, one hand demonstrating, so apologize for the way too close up shots :) total babble side note, I love my new S4 camera, the video has the option to pause and restart like a real camcorder, I was impressed.... yeah, fine, may not take much!!!

Jen what an AWESOME video!! I might pick up some sprouting stuff today :D

How much sprouts do you feed your birds every day? How much of them does Ivory eat?

We hand out maybe a handful everyday, but they don't all get eaten everyday. I still think the lentils are the favorites (human and feathers).

Ivory prefers to eat the sprouts when she can steal them from someone. Or when I am rinsing them in the morning, she will usually come out to investigate. I'll put a rinsed tray of sprouts and let her grab whatever she wants. Guess they just taste better when they freshly picked instead of delivered to your food bowl :)

If you are just feeding Chili, I would start with one tray of lentils, probably not even a full tray just to try it out. If you like veggies, you'll probably like them too. Let her try them everyday as they sprout too, they taste different at different stages. For lentils my favorite is like second day when the tails are just started to extend. I let this batch of lentils go too long, they are not nearly as nutty flavor, tho still healthy!

Hope that answers your question, if not, let me know... I'm babbling, was a long day with lots of driving :)

Update video! Here is next morning sprout check... some tails already!!

When you get the tiny tails, just rinse and give them a try!

You had inspired me to try sprouting, so i did.....and Gil is not eating them. Little pain in the butt! They taste good too. He may come around but so far, not into them.

Really!! Well, isn't he just being a little pain! Keep trying, he make like them with more tail! When Ivory first tried them, she would snip off the tail and just eat the lentil :) Now she likes to steal them right out of the tray!

Good luck and I hope Gil comes around, after your hardwork for him, he should appreciate you more!!! :)

Very helpful. Just what I was looking for.

Thanks jen- I'll probably start with just one tray then...I'm thinking of offering them to everyone, including the budgies, and my hubby likes sprouts so we'll see how this goes. He grumbles because I make things like bird bread and he can't eat it because I tell him it's for the birds lol

when I take them to the rescue, they are a huge hit with the cockatiel / budgie group! I hope your little ones love them as much :)

Jen, what awesome videos! I just found the trays on our amazon up here and am going to get to ordering! You have made this seem so much easier than any other sprouting instructions I have found. Thank you!!

This is so perfect! I have always been like "Oh I should feed sprouts" but the one time I tried it I got mold, and didn't want to feed that to my birds, I need some of those trays!
