Starting from scratch...

Stepping up usually means the birds steps up on a hand or a perch... When you want the bird to step down, it usually means, you want him off your hand/perch onto something else... So, you can use 'step off', which may make more sense, since the bird might still be stepping 'up'-wards.

Max mostly steps down, when I put my hand in to get him out of the cage, but I still say 'step up'.. To Max 'step up' means 'step onto my hand'.. When I want him to go onto his perch, I say 'on your perch'... I say that a lot, because Max keeps on flying onto me, I then offer my hand after a little while, and say 'on your perch', and he'll fly over there...

It doesn't matter much what words you use, as long as they make sense to you, and you are consistent in your wording, your bird will know what you want.. Yeah... I think.... lol
