Ricco - Goffin's Cockatoo
Me, again. ;)

1. I want to go to a bird store tomorrow and get a ladder for Mr. Ricco. But is that okay to do? The store has baby birds and some adult birds in there. Would it be alright to just go in (not take him) and purchase some things? Then come home and wash my hands and be safe to handle him?

2. I may or may not want to dye my hair... LOL. I can't decide. But if I do, is he going to hate me?!

3. He's almost constantly shivering... He's doing it less and less now, but it still worries me a bit. He especially did it today after his shower when he was inside, but I took him outside to dry in the sun and now he's napping and not shivering anymore.

Thanks :)

I have purchased toys from stores like that and never had a problem.
Also color my hair form time to time (nothing drastic) and my birds don't even seem to notice . I do it way far away from them at the other side of the house because of fumes and all.
I think the shivering is okay too , Cosmo does that when he gets nervous or excited. He did it a lot when he first came home . Not as much now.

My conures shiver after a bath. I believe it's just an automatic response to warm up unless he shivers throughout the day.

I bring my birds to the pet stores to get clippings. They seem to like the adventure. The bird stores i go to have a seperate bird room where other outside birds are restricted. I think it is rather safe, except if it is a shady bird store that carries sick birds all the time...

I have never been really sure about this either! Codie does this quite alot!

Its normal to shiver a lot after a shower. Sometimes including up to a few hours later until they are dry down to the skin.
On dyeing your hair, that can be a tricky one. I haven't painted my nails for 10 years or more but painted them blue for the fouth of july. Almost all the birds wanted to bite them at first and Diva, my favorite YNA who I have an awesome bond with wanted nothing to do with me for days. I finally went out last night and got nail polish remover and now we are back to being friends. You might be okay if you dye it a similar color to what you already have. Like going a shade lighter or darker blond or doing something like a small amount of highlight or low light. If you go totally a different color, there could be some problems.
Regarding getting things from stores, I try to buy things from places where birds are not in the store. Or, if I must, I buy from places that have the birds separated from the bird supplies by a considerable distance and then I wash it when I get home.

I had a Zon who never liked my friend after she died her hair !!
She went from blonde to really dark and he never went near her after that.
Before he used to go all googly eyed when he saw her , but after that , he would hiss at her if she went near his cage.....I will never forget that , it was shocking to the both of us since we were young 20 year olds...
But my Mother said that he preferred blondes , lolol.

I heard a similar thing of a lady who ran a rescue cockatoos program; rehabilitation, rehoming, etc - but in her case of birds not liking hair colour, her's was opposite! She was fair haired, but the bird wouldn't let her near him.

She ended up rehoming him with a family with dark hair and he settled down happily. :D

It's always the blondes

I have to say that I went from having bright red hair to blonde hair and Bert didn't notice, it didn't phase him at all, considering his favourite past time is playing in my hair and chewing/preening it!
And he also shivers when he is excited or he will shiver and then shake and fluff himself up, but that usually means its nap time :)
