Parrots
Tucker- Goffins Cockatoo
Hello Everyone,
So after a long hard look at my apartment today I/we decided that we only have room for one medium parrot, our Goffins. :(. But let met tell you a little story. My first interest in birds was not my wife's Goffins. We were strolling through petco or petsmart ( horrible i know) for fish food. Out of the corner of my eye I saw this beautiful bright bird, our eyes caught, and it was love at second sight. Second because I was used to this Goffins, who in the beginning of my wife and I's relationship would SCREEM.So at second look, he was pressed up against the cage just waiting to be loved. Like a young child I stuck my hand in the cage. He clung to it rubbing his head against my palm, we played for an hour. I turned to my wife and said, I want him. She laughed, and responded with " in our 450 square foot apartment, with Tucker and all your beer brewing equipment". I slowly slumped my head (again like a child) and replied with your right, but he is awesome sauce. Fast forward 5 years later and we were in a horrible bird store, where the owner was giving us completely bogus information on the breeds (I do my homework),on the bright side there were three sun conures, and two caiques. I again turned to my wife and said, (this time a little more maturely) I still love these birds. This time she replied with lets start actively looking after our vacation. The kid inside me sprung up with a huge ear to ear grin. So I have a few questions that I hope you wonderful people can help me with. How are Sun conures with other birds, Tucker has had a small companion almost all 25 years of his life, its just been the last few that he hasn't. Does anyone know any reputable breeders in the NYC and surrounding area. And I know tho isn't the caique forum but I am asking the same two questions for them as well.
Thank you
P.s We now live in a much bigger apartment.

My only advice for you is to let your bird pick you. My green cheeked conure picked me and our relationship is amazing. I don't know anything about suns but gcc are amazing so I'm assuming a sun would be awesome. Good luck with the hunt for your new addition.

Suns are fun...noisy...beautiful...noisy...chewers...and, if as MissTaz said, you let the bird choose you, you usually will end up with a keeper......

Good luck and welcome to the world of crazy bird people, though many are crazier than others.....

I have a couple friends that have sun conures and they say that they are good with birds their size and up. So your goffin should be fine but just make sure the introduce them correctly.

Also I totally agree with letting the bird pick you. When I adopted my female eclectus LuLu she picked me instantly, although it took me a while to understand that

If you live in an apartment, you might have trouble with the sunnie's screams (often, loud and high pitch) and yes, they are chewers (old my 'bird Tshirts' have huge holes on the shoulders and back due one single Sunday). Caiques are quieter.

I absolutely love suns, i have had suns for almost 9 years and have never looked back... the noise can be a problem, it just depends on how sound proof your apartment is! :)
They have tonnes of personality, incredibly easy to train and arent fussy eaters generally!
They definitely find great enjoyment in chewing... anything from shirts to sofa arms... so keep them busy with lots of branches to chew up!

I must have got lucky! My sun is very loud but not very often! He doesn't make a peep until I stand up out of bed, which is around noon because I work evenings, and I take him out first thing. He usually gives 7 or 8 screams and then I don't hear from him again until I get home from work and let him out. He usually screams 6 or 7 times when he sees me after work. Aside from that he is a pretty quiet little boy.

Sunny is such an awesome parrot. He is super sweet and cuddly and is content to snuggle and be loved. He does like to chew a LOT, so I always have something safe and chewable on hand for him. My GCC is not content to just snuggle & hang out. She gets bored! But not Sunny. He's a real sweetheart. Now he can be loud, but we encourage squawking and screaming from our birds cuz we think it's adorable (and we're bird crazy weirdos). :p. Oh, and don't shoulder a Sun unless you wanna go deaf, lol.
