This baby is seriously determined to be out of his cage...I open the cage to add a perch and a toy...this is the result.

LOL looks like this little one is too smart for his own good!

lol! I feel you there...I mean, mine took the locks apart and then was just hanging out on top when I got home (until I reinforced everything with stainless hitches etc)
...but this guy has stealth (and some guts lol!)--Maybe he will chill out once he finds that he will be out more often? lol
That face of accomplishment...mildly smug and so adorable- the fact that he didn't fly away is quite good!

This is going to seem weird, but he KIND OF looks like Carson from Downton Abbey in that 1st picture (and that is actually a compliment despite what you may think when you see the picture haha)...If you haven't seen the show, a still-frame probably won't do it justice...but I will try...But really, just watch the show haha..Equally stubborn character ;) Also-- I this is my first 2020 reference to that show, so...ya know..I had to...

Oh my, you do have a lively one. I hope your cats don't find out Sunny is getting out!

I’ve been putting the cats in basement when I need to open his cage after his first escape. The cat’s aren’t allowed in that room anyways, and the door is always closed but I’d rather know for sure the cats can’t follow me into that room. He did it again last night. This weekend I’m going to let him out on purpose. Hopefully that will help him to not bombard me when I try to clean up his cage. This time his perch of choice was the curtain rod.

Is he pooping? lol

Lol,no poop there, the curtain rod is less than 1” from the wall. And he was thinking about 1 more lap before I could capture him with a perch. He did poop ON the bed underneath while I moved him back to his cage a few minutes later.

Sunny’s name should be changed to something that fits with his daredevil escape attempts. Thank God I had the foresight to lock cats in the basement because of Sunny’s prior escape attempts. Cage cleaning time didn’t go well this morning. Sunny escaped and my daughter came to ask me for help with Skye’s cage at exactly the wrong moment. Skye was happily singing away to one of his favorite songs and needless to say Sunny escaped and met Skye. Not ideal. At all. I should have locked the bedroom door, and in the future I will lock the door when I’m tending to Sunny.

So now I’m worried. Sunny has only been with us 12 days. We have had Skye for 6 weeks. Neither have been to the vet yet. I’m fairly certain Skye doesn’t have anything contagious but Sunny is still SO NEW!

Just separate them and hope for the best. One encounter is not the same as multiple encounters, so while there is a risk, it is equal to both birds (honestly) as neither has been to the vet. You are smart to quarantine the new one, but even birds that you have had can be carriers of asymptomatic illness, so you will still want to get them to the vet at some point before assuming neither has any diseases (even if one or both seem healthy). Is Skye healthy? ---probably, but not certainly.

Now I fear I have made you more nervous, so let me re-state that-----He didn't have contact with her poop, I am guessing you broke it up pretty fast, no food was shared, no water was shared, no sex occurred, and they are not a powder-down bird so little feather dust would have been spread around from that short instance. Is there a risk? Yes, but I would say it is probably fairly small (although certainly not ideal in terms of quarantine).

Your Sunny looks and sounds just like my Jefferson. My 2 budgies, Calliope and Jefferson, came clipped. Unfortunately, I had to get them clipped twice after that. The second time Jefferson refused to forgive me! He also refused to accept that he couldn’t fly. He was flying again, doing Top Gun maneuvers!, well before Calliope’s wings grew back, and kept teaching her until she could fly again too.

My Sun Conure wings were clipped again recently, unfortunately, so she currently cannot fly. However Jefferson keeps trying hard to teach her to fly. He wants to lead a rebellion against me- (I should’ve named him Napoleon.!) - and he wants her to join. He also keeps trying to teach Me to fly (!!) ....and, he wants Me to join his rebellion too.

My Jefferson and your Sunny are clearly birds of a feather. Just like mine, yours undoubtedly has plans to take over the world. Consider yourself warned!

I keep my two budgies in a huge cage. Nevertheless, Jefferson still demands to come out for hours daily. If I fail to comply with this demand he will also find a way to sneak out.

Regarding returning your bird to the cage, I suggest suggest you repeat the word “IN” very clearly each time you move your Sunny into his cage.

Having done this myself, my Jefferson knows what “IN” means. He will NOT follow the command. But if they’ve had their time out, and I tell him they must go IN, & then leave the room, Usually usually he and Calliope then go into the cage on their own. Jefferson absolutely makes it very clear it was His decision, not mine.

I expect something like this will work for your Sunny as well. :)

Good luck!

Yes, I did separate them as quickly as I could. It took about 15 minutes. I moved Sunny’s cage into Skye’s room while my daughter took photo’s on the iPad. Sunny did not have contact with Skye’s droppings, and vice versa since we were cleaning the cage. There was no exchange of food and water either.
