Taking your birds out

So for those that goes out and about with their birds. Is there a way to prevent your bird from pooping on you/your clothes or do you just deal with it?

Deal with it...spare t shirts in the car...Ivan goes out with me a lot...I "get it" maybe twice a year

I just wear an old t-shirt, you could put a towel on your shoulder or something. But a old t-shirt will be more comfortable I guess

I personally don't know how people 'cope' with parrots that aren't potty trained! I would highly recommend you potty train, which won't just be good for going out, but also will be good so your bird isn't leaving little presents around the house either.

There is also the option of a "flight suit" which includes a little pouch they poop in (like a birdie diaper)- FlightSuits? Bird Diapers - Avian Fashions However, given parrots have hard to clean feathers, not smooth skin on their bottoms I'm not so sure how sanitary I would find it to be diapering my bird.

Final option is a bird backpack. I actually use one when I take my bird into public because it is safer and easier (though he does come out freely at home on the back patio). One of the best investments I ever made for Kiwi! With the backpack, he just poops on the liner, just like in a cage. Also protects him from "curious" people/children/pets- Celltei Pak-o-Bird - the high quality light-weight carrier for your birds and parrots

See he's potty trained and goes when I open the cage up. However when you have him out for a while he's bound to go. I'm not going to have him hold it in. But I guess the spare t-shirt method or the towel method will be best for me. I was looking into the bird backpack but I'd much rather have him out on his aviator harness and let him have the freedom of roaming around.

My bird is potty praised and "alerts us" when he has to go. Perhaps work with your bird to be able to let you know so you can take him off and let him go on the ground instead of you.

I've been working on getting Kyo to fly to a perch or to fly onto her cage to poop. She gets it about 50% of the time now. She gets so excited when she does it right hehe and she starts yelling "POOPIE! POOPIE!" just like a little kid. It kills me.

Basically, positively reinforce when she poops where you want her to. And if you notice it has been a while since she used the washroom, move her to where you want her to go and wait. I praise Kyo by telling her "GOOD POOPIE!!" hence why she yells poopie at the top of her lungs when she poops in the right place

See, I'm talking about taking Duke out places with me. He's been flying from the cage to myself and from myself to the cage to go. And the wet wipes seems like a good idea.

Robin is trained to poop on command, but he won't hold it if he has to go. Raven, forget it. He refuses to learn and has to go as often as a budgie for some reason when he's on you,
Griffin is actually pretty safe, he seems to have trained himself lol. I haven't even tried to train Mink. Might be hard with a budgie.

I would never wear one of those. Around the house I really don't care if be goes on me since I only plain tees around the house.

Mine are potty trained, mostly (poop on command over trash can), but I carry a birdy "diaper bag," containing unscented diaper wipes, a couple of puppy piddle pads (which are GREAT to put under a chair in the poop zone used as a temporary perch/stand when we're out somewhere.

You can also time your bird's poopie time. When you know he's ready, just ask him to step up and ask him to poop (have a napkin ready). Parrot folks have this heightened intuition when their bird is ready to go. You know of what I speak!

That I do. I'm still unsure as to how to get a bird to poop on command. Just seems weird ya know?

Well, if you already do the timing thing, the rest is pretty straightforward. When you know he's about to go, put him over an approved spot. Once he does go, say "poop" (or whatever word/phrase works for you. Heck, it could even be "bombs away!" if you'd like. Lol) and praise him for doing a good job.

Soon enough he'll make the association between the word and the expected action.
