Hello. Me and my mom share a amazon red lored. She got him when she was 13, so hes old enough to be my dad. Hes 27-30 years old ( not sure on exact age, just range).

He has lived a good life, very healthy. Only health problem he has had was when he was a baby, when he got his beak stuck in a bell. The result of that event ( my mom says) it injured his beak, impairing his ability to talk/learn how to talk.

Chuckles is very affectionate. Hes happy getting scratchies all day long. Loves eating, and will beg for food if he likes what u got. He does so by screeching "HELLO" and will do a little dance. His favorite past time is signing and dancing. He does not like change, for example a new toy he'll run the other way.

Chuckles is my best friend, and my only true friend. I spend hours playing with him, singing and playing music. I talk with him too, he just brings so much joy and happiness into my life.

The point of this topic is, i wanna keep his mind active, challenge his way of thinking and have him reach his full potential. Ive been buying some toys and working with him on tricks and increasing his vocabulary (hopefully). Ill be posting his progress on this topic. I appreciate any and all input. If you got advice let me know, i just want the best for my love. Thank you for reading

Hello and welcome! What a handsome red lored you have!

One thought: have you taught him to fly to you on command (flighted recall)? I maintain this is one of the most enriching things you can do as it execises both he body and the mind with the most natural thing a bird can do.

And how about target training?

Aw ty! He is a handsome fellow. Quite the gentleman (unless its play time, then its on like donkey kong)

Honestly, im new to this so i dont know. Been trying to do it on my own, didnt recieve much help on the internet ( till now).

I asked my mom and she said he can fly on command, but she doesn't know what target training is either

Welcome to Parrot Forums and the Amazon Forum. The Place in which Amazon's Rule!

If you haven't, please read the first two Sticky Threads at the top of the Amazon Forum, highlighted in light blue. The first is Understanding Amazon Body Language. The Thread provides an understanding of what Amazons are communicating. Sit next to your RLA or have him sit on you and read the Thread to him out loud, Amazons love to be read to and while reading to your Amazon (several times) you will begin to understand just what your Amazon has been trying to tell you!

The next Thread is a foundation document that is just huge, Thread: I Love Amazons - ... This Thread contains tons of information for Living and Loving Amazons. I would strongly recommend that first look at the Segment that talks to Getting to the Foot of The Problem. This Segment speaks to avoiding foot problems by increase the size of the natural wood perches and eliminating dowel perches ASAP! There is over 30 Segments that will be of great help.

The Beak of a Parrot has little to do with the forming of sound and as a result words. The Avian Vet World continues to expand as does their understanding of the Structure of the Beak. Minor to major changes that they can make to allow a Parrot great use of its Beak for a wide cross-section of normal uses that will easy the life of the Parrot. If your RLA has not seen an Avian Vet, it is well worth setting up a visit.

Amazons, never stop learning! They may slow a bit in use of Language, but they likely have not use specific sounds and/or words for any number of reasons. Amazon's can become bored and if there is not much going on, they will just sit back. That said, they commonly join in on a family (group) sing along, etc... Amazons are excitement junkies and love to join in on the fun! Take an honest look at the activity level of your home and more specific, what activities involve your Amazon.

Enjoy!

Targeting means to come and touch something on command. TRheting can be used for teaching so many other behaviors.

This shows an example. Teaching targeting, then how it can be applied to flight. Settle in, it’s a slightly long watch but worth it.

First one is targeting

This forum is a godsend, i would spend hours searching online for awnsers, to no avail. Thank you so much

WELCOME to you and Chuckles (and MOM :p) to the Parrot Forum! If you decide to hang out with us,you will learn a wealth of invaluable info about Amazon's!
There are a number of folks here that I would consider "experts" on Amazon's in general, and there are a number of folks with RLA's who can steer you in the right direction with diet, toy's,training etc.
Steven (Sailboat) and Mark (Birdman666) are our leading Amazon Guru's,both having a wealth of info, and experience with 'zon's.

'Boats is correct about an Amazon always wanting to learn. Member "Wrench13" is owned by Salty,a Yellow Shoulder Amazon, who is unbelievably intelligent! (when you have some spare time, visit Al's (Wrench13) Amazon thread "Right now Salty is..." and you will be simply amazed at his Salty's smarts, and eagerness to learn,or go visit his You Tube page "captniceguy".

Again...WELCOME to the best dang Parrot Forum on the innerweb! And stick around! Oh...and BTW..we just LOVE pictures!! ( hint...hint..;))

Alright so ive been busy with work so ive been unable to get on here.

Chuckles has been doing good, hes been learning his colors and starting to say "i love you". Everyday he looks happier and greener.

In a few days i find out if im able to adopt a yellow head, so im excited for that. He is special needs though, he has trouble with mobility (falls off of perch). I am preparing a special cage for him, with padding included.

Im hopeful that all will go well, and i have a feeling the 2 will be good pals once they get to know each other

Pic is sorta dark but chuckles is so cute sleeping

what a handsome guy! Maybe it's the angle of the photo but his beak looks like it could use a trim to me. Amazons are little piggies so training should be easy with food motivation : ) Just watch what the treats are since they are prone to liver issues.
