"Quinn C. Pickle" Dusky Conure born 12/14/14 home 3/18/15
I'm so excited. This Wednesday will be 3 weeks since I first met my baby and the day I bring him home!! I cleared out all of our non-stick pans today and replaced them with bird safe ceramic pans. Cleared off the area where his cage will be until he moves into his big boy cage. Bought his organic veggies and heating pad for under his cage. I'm just ready for him to be HOME!!!

I was so excited once I put my deposit on mine and I onky had to wait mere days because he/she was weaned.

Don't forget to post some pictures!!!!! I told myself no more conures many years ago and here I have a Sun Conure that a member off here brought to my care due to it being in poor condition. She's a turd though....lol.....congrats!!!!

He's HOME!!! He did very well in the car until about the last 5-10 minutes of our 40 minute drive home.

Do conures 'shiver' when they are nervous? When they are cold?

I got his cage all set up before taking him out of the travel box. I held him on my hand in the cage until he was comfortable enough to step off onto the perch on his own which took about 15 minutes of him looking very unsure of what was happening. He kept working his way up my arm, not really wanting to be in the cage. I'd adjust him to the other hand, give him some love then put my hand back in. He eventually got brave enough to move to the perch. For the next half hour he just sat there shivering, silent and not moving, even though it is 80F in here and he has a heating pad under his cage. I stayed within sight and would go to the cage and talk to him for short periods of time. After about an hour he started playing with and nibbling on his spray millet which he is doing now. I'm taking that as a good sign!

Another question, should I cover his cage on 3 sides at night to hold in a bit of heat? I know I need to leave one side open but don't want him to get too cool at night.

They will shiver from cold and nerves. He just needs adjustment period. To cover or not is up to you but I don't cover mine.

I didn't cover mine either.

In fact, I got to the point where I didn't even close cage doors... but that comes later, after they are well trained.

Thank you for the reassurance. We've been home less than 2 hours now and he is seeming much more comfortable. He is currently picking out all of the green beans from his bowl of veggies and nibbling on his zu preem biscuit. I know this is going to probably sound really silly to everyone but remember this is my first bird. I have ZERO experience with birds other than visiting with him over the past 3 weeks. I just love how he uses his feet to pick up his food. I had no idea they used their little feet like hands. He picks up the green bean and puts it to his mouth. It's ADORABLE!

They are so special!
80F, you shouldn't need any kind of heating pad. Thru the winter, my house was 64F and JoJo was fine.
Our first GCC was terrified when we went to cover her cage. As I wind JoJo down for the night I cover three sides, then lights out, all four.
