My little Sprinkles is molting his first Molt ever he is 5 months old almost 6 months. Since this is his first I don't know what is normal for him.

Does your conure act or do things different when molting?

I can't wait for him molt to be over because his new feathers already look amazing. He is going to be one stunning black capped if I do say so myself.

The first molt to Adult feathers is always the most amazing since for most species it presents the colors of adulthood.

Generally, there is the discomfort of all those feathers. So, your 'Pretty Parrot' may be a little grumpy.

Salty boy is going thru his first molt, and taking his sweet time about it too, poor guys neck and head are covered in pin feathers. Lots of baths/showers, plenty of sun or full spectrum lighting, lots of protein in his diet. I have to watch when I skritch him so I dont rub a pin feather the wrong way, but his personality is no worse or better then before the molt.

The first adult molt is a major molt, so often birds are super miserable. Molting is not pleasant for a routine molt where only a small percent of feathers are lost and replaced, but to have that all over itch and then the pin feathers popping thru the skin. Be very careful handling him, when the pin feathers first break thru the skin, they are usually super sensitive.

But if your little guy is grumpy and miserable, try to think of having a toothache or sinus infection / head cold. Not like you can't function and do stuff, but you're just feeling miserable. Try misting or spraying him, helps quite a bit.

Look forward to seeing photos of your pretty little guy once he has his 'man' feathers in!! :)

Thanks guys. I can't wait to see how he looks with his big boy feathers.

Her personality is does not seem to have changed much.

I have a Hahn macaw and he is 4 months old and has been molting for at least three weeks. He started out behind his neck and some on his back and now on top of his head. His personality is the same when he wasn't molting and he loves when I rubbed his pin feathers. I just wondering why it taken a good while to molt? He eats good and we take him outside. He bathes 2 times a week. We do live in south Louisiana where it is hot so not sure if this is the reason his molting is taken a awhile.

My little guy is still molting. It takes a long time to replace every feather on the birds bodies. Seems like for my guy his wing feathers are last go come in.

Sprinkles started with his tummy and neck. He is getting new back feathers now. He lost 2 tail feathers.

Nigel is also in his first adult molt. He is uncomfortable but not mean at all. He lets me open pin feathers that are ready and is most appreciative. Lots of cool showers, out time, good food. He is actually more loving as he is thankful for the relief! Just can't touch the sensitive new feathers.
