Orange-Winged Amazon ~ Marley
Hi all i wondered if you could answer this question for me as i have looked over the net but couldn't find an answer..

Marley eats so much fruit I'm starting to think its making him poop 10 times what he should.. i mean how much fruit can they eat and still stay healthy? id say 90% of his diet is fruit.. not that he doesn't have the choice of veggies and seed.. he eats bait of seed especially sunflower seeds if there given to him but LOVE his orange and apple so much!

is this ok?

thanks all :)

I don't know about amazons specifically, but fruit has a lot of sugar. Veggies are a better option. Maybe try slowly mixing in the veggies Ina higher and higher ratio. Chop is a good way to mix everything so they can't pick out their favorites and leave the rest. Also pellets are better than a seed based diet. Does he eat any pellets? Seeds are fattening.

He shouldn't have that much fruit, especially citrus (orange, lemon, lime, etc...) the acid is hard on his digestive system and the high sugar isn't so good either.

Veggies (cooked & raw) cooked brown rice, cooked whole grain pasta, and soaked and cooked dried beans are better for him.

I make chop mixes for Zilla and just portion & freeze in serving size containers or bags. Super easy to make and then just defrost and serve.

My vet said fruit a couple times of week and limit that to just a couple of slices.

My Macaw has fruit every morning along with some shredded wheat :) .. Tropical fruit blend and a little safflower seed blend in his dry bowl .
Evening when I get home from work is veggie time. A Walnut or Pecan after.

Fruit are not always the same Apple slice and grapes this morning .

Edit: I do limit the high acid fruit he gets. And only organic Strawberries.

Buddy, my Amazon is the poopinator. Regardless of what I feed him, if I get him out and he sits with me on my shoulder, he poops. I have designated "Buddy Friendly" shirts. He's going on 25 years old and we are working on potty training but in my opinion he poops a lot, more than I would like. Buddy comes out each morning to have coffee Tim, about an hour, I drink my coffee, he preens and tries to get in my coffee cup.

Thanks for all your replys and ive obviously read something the wrong way as ive been feeding him mainly fruit and seed. I will tty make him a chop and see how that goes :)
