Velcro Venus has been stuck to me like glue so much that she now comes out of her cage and searches for me. Yesterday, she cut my hand when she was falling backwards, loosing her balance and trying to catch herself. Today while she was on my hand I picked up some nail trimmers and she let me trim her toes!!! Sat there like nothing, she got a "Good Girl" each time I trimmed. I was so excited.

Hey I can do this! Put her in her cage, "Hi Buddy, come see me." Buddy is my Green Cheek Amazon. His toes didn't get trimmed, even when I showed him the trimmers and showed how fun they were to play with, he cried because they were going to eat him and flew back to his cage. (Sigh)

Here is a picture of my hand and the trimmers. Are human nail trimmers OK? I had no resistance and I didn't go to short. Her nails are still a little long but I worry about trimming dark toe nails.

My female ekkie needs her nails trimmed and I've been waiting because I didn't want to bother her. I would rather have a scratch than bother my baby. I have pin marks from her all over my arm.

I can do better with human nail cutters. I don't cut as far on the nail. It seems with nail clippers for bird/animals I always cut too short making them bleed. I read somewhere that the goal is to only clip the points so that has helped me not clip too short...but I'm learning.

I will try it sometime in the next few days for clipping my ekkie. Thanks for sharing it wasn't too bad for you.

So far I have been lucky and not had to trim BB's nails. Doubt he would let me anyway. I keep a few Sand / concrete Perches in his cage. I make sure his treat bowl has one next to it and so far they have kept his nails trimmed.

Actually they got sharp one month and i realized I had to replace one of the perches. they also help with his beak

I tried the sand perches with Buddy and that chicken wouldn't go near them. He literally hung on the bars of his cage a couple of days. I love the sand perches, I need to put some in for Venus, Buddy, he's so picky.

I had a HUGH perch in BB"s cage. He had been having foot issues and I suspect it was that perch . He would stay on it and no other. I removed the perch because of red spots on the bottom on his feet. Let me tell you he was livid with me. hung to the side of the cage. Yelled at me. I sung to him he stopped yelling. Trust me you do not want to hear me sing A Beach Boys song California Girls and dance. NOT pretty. That would stop the yelling. But every time I came in the room that sucker would jump off the perch he was on or playstand and go onto the inside or outside of the cage trying to get me to feel sorry for him.

We are both over it now . Took a few days. I have a swing for him but so far its still a monster wanting to eat him. YAWN .

Oh and Wendy if you read this........... He has learned to undo the Hose clamps. Bend them enough they will break LOL

I personally use a dremel, but it's easier for me.

I don't like human nail clippers because they tend to "crush" the nail and can make them split a little. Get a pair of dog nail clippers that are curved, as they'll cut evenly, and try to get a pair without the guard because I find it to get in the way more than help.

You're only cutting the tip, so only a millimeter or two off at a time, unless they're overgrown but even still. I hate doing them but I could never get any of my birds used to them being done!

ROTFL!!!!!! At BB!!

Great tip !

I am "allowed" to trim the nails on just a few of my parrots, and use a very sharp human clipper during a cuddle session.

Some birds seem to have nails that grow to a manageable length and do not require trimming while others naturally extend to an uncomfortable degree.
