Turn Gizmo & Pebbles

I have been working on turn with Gizmo and Pebbles, we are not there yet, but I thought I would put up a midway video (I still need to use hand signals with the command, you will see my finger turning)

Pebbles looks like she doesn't know what to do (going slow), but that's just Pebbles, she will do it, at her own pace

Excellent work you 2. Always use both hand and vocal signal, and eventually they will be able to do it with just a vocal command.

Look no hands

Gizmo and Pebbles have got it:!! they are turning now without hand signals, just a turn command (although they are aware the treat is there, so next step is command with hidden treat).

I actually was going to hold out for a bit with a video, as I am getting synchronised turning, but the hardest bit is recording it. Firstly Gizmo has a camera fascination (here's one of the outtake videos):

Secondly Gizmo is a jealous boy, so he tends to try to push Pebbles away when the treat is around (you can see Pebbles hesitation and side stepping in the first video, and even though Gizmo has his treat he tries to push her away). Adding the camera into the equation, just gets Gizmo all worked up, making things worse.

I think parrots actually like training, and not just for the treats. I think they enjoy a sense of accomplishment, same as people do, when they get a trick down well. I know Salty is all like "Look what I just did" , when he gets something down well. The verbal reward I just as important as the treat. Good job, guys.

So true! Working toward a goal and making achievements is a mentally healthy activity for them. The mental stimulation makes them happy.
