As some of you know we recently adopted a U2 name Java. We have a Lesser Sulphur Crested that we've had for 7 years, she can be unpredictable but after having her around for 7 years, we know her pretty good. I am still learning what Java does and he's lounged at me just once so far. Even with years of experience, you'll still get bit pretty good by an unpredictable Cockatoo. I knew what I was getting into when I decided to adopt him. BUT for those people who think they're so cuddly and cute, THINK TWICE! They will turn on you so quick, then turn around wanting attention and love from you. I think partially is because he was allowed to do a lot more without any repercussion before me. I know the previous owner, whose becoming a good friend to me now, had a hard time with him to begin with. Her husband and family is actually happy that he's gone out of their home. She still loves him dearly, but moving on pretty good as Java was probably controlling their everyday life. Now I'm trying to teach Java, it is NOT the same in this household. I have made him back off on several occasions. And step up on command. So I think tonight he's throwing a hissy fit, but still calls me to go see him. I ignored all his squabble and he quiet down. And I also think is because of all the changes he's going through lately from moving here, moving into a different cage, having the room cluttered from us working on his room, then moving into the other room. Plus he gets jealous if my partner is in there with me or if I'm taking other birds out before him. He was the only bird being taken out at his previous home so he's pretty spoiled rotten. I hate to clip but I'm gonna have the vets clip him as I don't trust him since he's done a fly attack towards my partner. Chasing my partner out of the room. He's part of the reason why I haven't participate much within the forum cause he keeps me on my toes. I'm trying to learn his ways now so I can be prepared with what he's trying to do. So far I caught on pretty good as he give me the evil eye before he bit me. But that happened while he was in his cage. He's usually in my lap laying his head against me being sweet, but now he's showing his true colors. I've been watching for it, but I guess it wasn't good enough since he bit me pretty good. I haven't gotten so much scars on my hands until last October with my Macaw and his full maturity hormone and now Java the unpredictable U2. Dixie our other too had her moments, but I got her trained pretty good that she no longer have that type of issue, she's about 20 something years old now. So for those people wanting a Cockatoo, think twice!!!! I have seen MORE Cockatoo people are trying to find homes for then any other birds. Of course it is the same everywhere else as well. BUT be warned!!!!! Even with the more experienced bird folk can run into issue with a Cockatoo!!!

I'm glad she's learning better with you.

When I went to the local parrot rescue, there were more cockatoos than any other large bird.

That's the unfortunate part. Java's previous owner doesn't want him to go into such place. There's also another lady not too far from us, after she visited her, she told me no way Java would ever go there as the lady's other toos were in bad shape. She's seen my birds and we get along pretty good and she's happy that Java is with me instead. We keep our house in pretty good shape considering we both work full time and we've got a ton of animals on our hands. Everyone gets fed proper diet and gets taken care of pretty good. And we don't have pile of bird poop in the bird cage like some people allow....We spend A LOT of time cleaning every single day!!!!! Along with my plant hobby as I raise orchids, african violets, and other types of plants. Plus during summer time I take care of my outside garden, plus do my own fix ups around the whole house all year long. Like the bird's new room, as soon as I get the new door up I'll post some pics. I am very very busy!!! Other then working 70hrs a week, on my break time people have to make schedule with me a month in advance as I help with other types of stuffs like filling out paper work, dealing with medicare, helping people with animal issue, etc etc....I do them all for free with friends and family....lol....

I am working with humans with intellectual disabilities... and I often compare them to parrots (which I shouldn't, because they're not animals, but human beings)... BUT the smallest thing can set these guys off, so they'll be aggressive, self mutilate or sulk....

Being quietly assertive around them, seems to work with the guys as well as with the birds...

After reading about you and Java I am sure you will win I long term lol

Ill always win! I don't give in that easily! Java just doesn't know it yet but he will soon realize he can't treat me the same way he did to his previous family. :)
