Lucky is still sick.
Still sneezing.
After 3 times going to the CAV and not getting help I went to the exotic vet that is much closer to me.

I still had to do the visit by remote control. I did not even get to speak directly with the vet only the technician.

According to the vet there have been a lot of upper repertory illness (in birds) going around.

The vet gave him a shot, some sort of vitamin booster.
I was also given 3 meds to give him every day.
Orbax antibiotic.
vitamins in a syringe .
and drops (don't have the name handy but I can get it later) to be given in his nares.

I sure hope this helps he has been sick for a long time now.

texsie.

Hi texsize,

Have you considered putting a heat source close to Lucky cage? It could be a lamp (or a ceramic heat emitter that do not produce light.

Birds have a costly metabolic system that needs to keep temperature up to 38-40 Celsium degrees. When they have to fight an infection, much of the energy goes to the immune system and little is spared for heating up the body. The demand to keep the body heated will stress its metabolism and sometimes it complicates its healing capacity.

I have had great results with budgies recovering from colds thanks to the heat source that released the metabolism to focus on fighting the infection.

I live in the high desert of Ca and heat is not a problem just now.
I have a small hot plate that mounts on the side of the cage.
I could move it but..... IDK
Lucky has a cage mate and there is no way to know who would end up using it.
I don’t want to separate Lucky from Baby. They been together since 2002 and it would be cruel.

Glad to hear Lucky has Baby do not separate them.

The best is to keep the heat source outside the cage giving the bird the option to approach it when he/she feels like and or get some distance to not overheat.

I also live in a warm place and used the heat as an option for the bird. It is important to leave some room away from the heat source to allow him to avoid overheating.

Anyway, considering Lucky has Baby, both will most likely keep each other warm.

Cheers

Distressing to hear Lucky's update, Wes. Seems whatever the problem it is either chronic or continues to defy meds. Current vet's idea of supporting his immune system is not a bad idea. I'd be a lil concerned with various supplements in addition to whatever nourishment he gets from basic diet. Don't want to tax liver and kidneys dumping excess vitamins/minerals. Hope you see some relief!

Yesterday evening we (Son and I) gave Lucky.
His first dose of antibiotics and nose drops.
We skipped the first dose of vitamins because he got the shot in the office.
He did well all evening and had no sneezing.

He was back to sneezing again just a bit ago.
I have a better feeling about this group of meds and this veterinarian I (didn’t) see.

Sometimes you have to trust your experienced instincts. Hope this vet practice winds up curing Lucky's sneezing! Fingers crossed, Wes!

We are supposed to be opened up here in California but each store/business can make there own rules.

My X CAV now has a policy in place that I won?t put up with.
Next best alternative I could find (CAV) was more than an hour away and had a waiting list for appointments two weeks long.
Not very useful :(

I would go back to my original CAV for an emergency but nothing else.

That sucks. We are hoping Lucky starts to respond to the new meds.
