Hello everyone. My first nite with Paco went really well. Before bed I sat with him talking softly and offered him cantalope. He LOVED the cantalope and ate alot of it. He's so quick to try to bite my fingers anytime they are near his cage so it was nice to see him taking the cantalope from me without trying to kill me lol. I covered him when it was time for bed, and I also took his food bowl out so he would be hungry in the morning. I was hoping to put some fruit and veg in his bowl and he would eat it because he was hungry, no such luck. He did like being covered tho, the woman i got him from said she never covered him, I wanted to try. He didnt mind it at all. So anyway I gave him some bananna and broccoli this morning and he went right over to the bowl and threw it all out onto the bottom of the cage. I dont think he knows what to do with it, he's been on cockatiel seed since he was 3 moths old. So I cleaned up the mess and offered him some apple thru the cage. He loved it and ate a good bit. I guess we're making baby steps and Im ok with that. He's out of the horrible enviroment he was in and Im happy I could do that for him!

I forgot to ad he only had one little cat toy in his cage for who knows how long. Ive added some toys and it seems he doesnt know how to play with them. He's not afraid of them, he doesnt avoid them, he just doesnt touch them. I dont understand why this woman treated him like that. The GCC that was next to him had so many toys in its cage it could barely move. I wonder why she didnt give some to this bird. Just sayin...

Have you ever read the book "A Child Called 'It'"? It's about a boy who is the subject of his parents abusive behavior (and let me tell you, it's disgusting, heartbreaking and infuriating if you can stomach to read it) while his siblings are treated "normally", as in, not abused at all. Sometimes, abusers focus all their abusive tendencies towards one child, out of multiple children, and they can do the same with animals. Which is what it sounds like in this situation. Seems as though she treated the other bird(s) with some semblance of caring while Paco took the brunt of her abuses. It's not fair, it's not right, but it is most likely the scenario. And perhaps when she got Paco, he didn't know how to play with toys, behaved as he does with you in regards to them, and so she just assumed that he wasn't interested in toys at all and took them away, figuring she'd give them to the bird(s) that do play with them.

I give Loki toys all the time, but he often doesn't play with them. It's only been in the last month or so that he's actually started to play and be interested in the toys. I've had him since October. So maybe that woman simply wasn't patient enough?

I'm glad you got Paco out of that situation and I hope that you stick with it. He might not always be aggressive - it can take time to turn a bird around especially after coming out of a bad situation. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Katherine! Im definately sticking with it. Im happy he got out of that horrible situation. It wasnt a good sitation for any animal from what I saw...and smelt. I have faith he'll come around one day, until then its just one day at a time.
