Hello everyone,
I have a lovely GCC, Tim
I’ve owned him for 5 years from a baby, he’s our best friend and main source of entertainment (as I’m sure you can imagine!)
2 days ago I noticed he was fluffed up and sleeping with his head in his back/feathers during the day, which isn’t normal for him. He was still drinking and eating, toileting and when awake was very much himself.
After some dreaded googling and a call to our local bird shop, I hoped/assumed his was tired from his moult. However, later that day he seemed more lethargic and was squinting his eyes.
Our emergency vet isn’t an exotic/avian vet, so I waited until 8am to take him to the specialist vet.
He had dropped a few grams in weight and was much the same in energy levels. So he’s been admitted for fluids and monitoring.
They called me yesterday to say he’s eating and drinking well, seems a little brighter and has even gained a gram in weight. But they wanted him a little stronger to administer sedative medication to then draw blood to find the cause of his behaviour. They suspect liver or kidney issues.
I’ve just had another call this morning, he’s lost 2 grams of weight. My heart is breaking. But he’s still seeming brighter than day one, poops are better, (he had runny poops, and a green tint to them), and he’s still eating and drinking well.
They’ve had him on fluids, antibiotics and a mild medication for liver issues (just in case and not too strong before they get bloods).
He’s been there 24 hours now, so not a long long time, and there is slight improvement but I’m just petrified of the worst. They’re going to try a muscle relaxer to then take a small amount of blood, and see what they can find out about the kidneys and liver. I’m hoping it shows something that can then be helped with medication and he’ll be okay.
I guess I’m looking for someone to share a similar experience or an insight on how long it may take for him to feel better? Am I expecting a miracle from 24 hours? Could it be a few days maybe?
The vet is very kind, and I’ve said money is no barrier, I’ll find a way to pay. She said today that if that’s the case then we can give him time - so I’m hoping that means it can take a few days for them to start feeling happier??
I’m just trying to find some hope… I’d really appreciate anything you can say that may help me or my little birb
Thank you x
