Hi All;
I am new and wanting to know about taking a vacation (Up to a week) with your bird. I know this situation will arise sometime in the future.
Is it better to leave your bird with someone or take him with you? What about staying in a motel/hotel? Do you take a bigger cage for them to stay in when you reach your destination?
I am a new mom to an 8 week old BG macaw. I do have a travel cage for him.
thanks
Cindy

Welcome Cindy! :D

You can not go wrong by taking your bird with you, there really isn't any negatives in it. My IRN, iguana and bearded dragons goes with every month when we go away and they enjoy it immensely.

My girl's wings are clipped so I take her sleep cage with and her toy swings that we hang up for her. You need to make a checklist of all the things that you need to pack, food, toys, emergency supplies etc. Also find out where the vet is before you go. If you are going to a motel / hotel then I would say it would be best to first phone them and get permission. I think they might have a problem with noise.

If you are going to travel far then I would suggest to travel at night, it is less stressful.

If you can not take you bird with then you need to find somebody to babysit. Your bird must be used to the person and also like him. It has happened plenty of times that people come back from holiday or business and their parrot hates them. Best is to take him with.;)

Agree with Linky ...it is very doable...if you are driving. But we also have a friend who has a pet supply support store has kept my birds and they feel comfortable there.

Hi there, I also agree that you can take your bird with you. With your question about taking a bigger cage, you need to find out if you will be around your bird alot while on holiday. The reason I say this is because if you will be around them then a small cage is fine because they can be out most of the time. Linky is right in saying that you need to be aware of where the closest vet is and if there is a petshop close - you never know what you might need etc. I went away to school with my bird and forgot her food - lol. Luckily there was a store near and could make a plan. I partially cover Rosie's cage when I travel and have her on the front seat so that I can still chat to her and she can see me. I also have rescue droplets on hand if she gets upset but she loves travelling.

Its lovely taking my bird with me and I also makes lists to ensure that Rosie has everything she needs :) I also find that when Im away that if I try copy her environment at home she settles quickly. Her cage is moved around alot at home but her toy box and toys are always on the counter in front of her cage and she eats her fruit and veg in the same area of her cage as at home.

we were given 2 cages when we got remington, im planning on taking one of them to our beach house and leaving it there. he travels well in his travel carrier

I own a small airplane and have been considering taking my B & G Sam with me when I travel. Has anyone else done this. My only concern is the noise?

ESPECIALLY at only 8 weeks old, I vote take him with you for sure! Are you still hand feeding him? I'm a freak anyways, so I know I'd definitely take Maui, at least as young as he still is, however, we're planning ahead to start taking little trips in the car, then to gramma's, then to spend the night at gramma's returning in the AM, then a little long and so on and so forth and often so that Maui almost seem to have 2 homes and I will feel safe flying over sea's to Hawaii once we go back for vacation. Good Luck!

I am looking ahead to when we go away for a weekend or maybe a longer trip. I think I would for sure take him with if we were just going away for the day or a weekend camping trip or to visit my folks. A longer trip though, I think I would feel safer if he were with a friend. He is not perching well yet so not ready for any car rides.
