Red (6 mths old)Is a Cherry Head Conure. When I bought him they told me he would be very loud. I will have him a week as of tomorrow. He is so quite you would never know that there is a bird in my house. He says Hi all the time and grinds his beak alot. I have been talking to him all the time hoping that he will pick up new words. Is this normal for him to be quite, or will he adjust and than show me his loudness after awhile.

He is also out of his cage most of the day. Either on my shoulder or the back of my chair or on his playtop of the cage. Is there such a thing of being out of the cage to much?

I had a sun conure, also known to be very loud, who was the same way.

I got the good morning squawk. I got the happy to see you when you get home squawk. And I got the occasional I want some of what ever that is you are eating squawk.

If he's grinding his beak a lot, that's a contentment noise. It means his needs are met. He isn't upset, so he isn't screaming. As long as you don't train him to scream by doing his bidding every time he utters a peep from his little beak, he should stay that way.

It generally means that you are doing good...

In my opinion, no.

Here's the thing. My little sunnie, who also didn't scream, was also an outside the cage bird...

Coincidence?! I think not!

THEY DON'T LIKE BEING CAGED. THEY WANT TO BE OUT, AND THEY WANT INTERACTION. THE MORE YOU GIVE THEM THAT, THE MORE INCREDIBLY INTERACTIVE THEY BECOME...

And conures are basically shrunken macaws. So, yeah, big goofy personality birds!

I'm so happy to know that he might not be a screamer. I get the scream the same as you did. He will sometimes scream if he is on his cage and I walk out of the room. Today when I was doing dishes he sat on the windowsill enjoying him self.

No just to get him to talk more.

birdyman is right =)
I have a sun conure and before i got him i spent days reading blogs and forums about sun conure behaviour and they all went on about the noise... now i know this common in most of the conure species especially sun's but after having mine for over a year now i have never found him to be a screamer.

Now don't get me wrong if he's sat on my shoulder and decides to belt one out it hurts (they have a very piercing shrill call) But the only time he screams and gets a reaction from me is when i get up in the morning or come home from work, i've actively encouraged this from the beginning so that instead of teaching him all screaming is bad (an impossible task in itself) he is taught when screaming is appropriate.

I've always put the his quiet nature down to the amount of out of cage time he gets, basically if me or my other half are home then the cage door is open, if he wants to spend time with us he doesn't need to scream for attention he merely flies over and joins us, this principle is pretty effective in most matters.

Of course you will find someone in the exact same situation as me dealing with a bird on the other end of the spectrum... their like that =) so just remember this is only one person experience, you sound like you might just have a happy bird though.

I also have a sun conure that I was expecting to be really loud and scream consistently after researching them. He rarely ever screams. Don't get me wrong, he DOES sometimes but it's really limited to when we come home and he hears the door open or when we get up in the morning and he hears us moving around upstairs. That's about it. Well, he does do line of sight screaming sometimes but not that often really. Of course, being a bird I went into it knowing that screaming was part of the deal so for me there were no surprises at all:) I think where the problem arises is when people have no idea! Noise is a relative thing. I mean my sun conure will never be as quiet as your gecko but then again our house is a busy bustling place with lots of people and noises anyway so I think Lemon is rarely bored:)

My green cheek breaks the rules too! She is quite vocal :) not in an annoying way, but in a very interactive way. She loves to try to repeat what I say in her gravelly little voice, and when she sits on the window perch she chirps little noises while she watches the neighbours kids play outside.

They are such amazing little birds <3

Our gcc is not loud at all. He chatters in our ears, repeating our conversations and complains in our ears when he is mad. We get the odd squawk but that's about it. Love him.

JellyBean isn't loud either... He sits on my shoulder and starts to have a full conversation with me whilst nibbling my ear... it tickles and makes me laugh then JellyBean goes "He he he he .." It's hilarious...

our sun conures got loud at about 2 years old...then calmed back down at about 4 years old....

I'm siding with birdman with being quieter being relevant to being out of the cage. Our gcc is rarely noisey outside of his cage, but once he's in he's like "i want out, look at me!"
Less reasons to scream when they're out
