I have a male Solomon Island Eclectus named Sonny
I have a male eclectus named sonny....12 years old....very mellow...I would sit with him all the time...I would have my dinner when I fed him and we would basically eat together....he likes eating with people...one day he started banging his beak on his perch and continued to do it,even in his cage. so I was worried about it and I wouldn't sit in there with him because I was afraid he might hurt his beak...he will still step up for me and let me bring him out, but even then he will bang his beak on the wall or even on me...I really want to spend the time with him but I'm afraid he will injure his beak because if I'm in there he bangs it really hard....can someone help me?????:green2::green2::green2::green2:

I wonder if this could be related to wing flipping or toe tapping? I would certainly get in touch with your avian vet ASAP.

First, welcome to the Parrot Forums.

You question is no easy one to define in a quick-off the shelf answer. There is very good reason to want to take your question to the Eclectus Forum. In addition, if you have not already visited the Eclectus Forum, please do so and target reading the first few threads high-lighted in light blue.

Not sure whether Sonny is a recent addition to your family or a long time member?

It sounds like Sonny is kept separate from the family and that you are his primary connection with the world outside his room. Medium / large parrots are like humans and need to be part of the family. Not saying that this is the answer only that, if true, Sonny will be far happier at the center of the action.

Not sure what Sonny has available to keep him busy. All parrots need distractions (work), better stated 'TOYS' to take apart, paper to tear apart, etc...

Beak banging is one of many actions that a parrot will use to get their partner's attention, which would include us. However, rarely/never to the level that you are stating. Since, there could be an underlying medical cause. It is advisable to see his Avian qualified Vet.

I am very certain that other members will be posting with additional comment.

Although your help is appreciated to an extent, this would be encouraging members to cross-post, which is against forum rules.

If the OP would prefer their thread to be moved to the Eclectus forum, one of us moderators would be happy to do so.

Hello Mao55, and welcome to the forum!

Would you, by any chance, be able to capture this on video? Seeing what you're talking about would help quite a bit.

Having a male eclectus myself I have not experienced that....yet. However as Anansi put it, it would help having a video and perhaps a little more info of say, bed times, play times, out times, where cage is located at in relation to having a view of what's going on.

My Grey used to have a similar beak banging problem with banging his beak on his Cow bell....gee that thing makes an awful racket. So what I did is change up his daily routine and activities and it stopped. Sometimes it's just a matter of changing up routines so the birds are not bored. My birds have thousand of toys....and there are days when no toy will do the trick, they are not interested in play. So changing up things a bit can also change habits. Try it....see if you make progress.

is it possible if you could please move my thread to the eclectus forum????

Done!

Keeping an eye out for that video!

I will try to post a video...i'm not to familiar with posting videos but ill try

Just upload the video to YouTube, click on the Share tab, and then copy the URL link specifically for forums and boards. Then come back here and click on the chain link tab at the top of your reply window. Then paste and, voila! You're all set.

If you run into any problems, let us know.

(This can also be done via Photobucket, but I've found that YouTube is faster with videos.)

Mao55,

Reading your description of Sonny, it almost sounded like an extreme example of what Gizmo does sometimes. Here is a video, showing him doing it at the end.

[ame="http://youtu.be/4mz7IR4oThw"]Gizmo drying after a shower, things don't go as planned - YouTube[/ame]

Obviously Gizmo is not doing it hard enough for me to be concerned, and also if anything he only does it when he seems to be having fun, so again I am not concerned by it.

Just wanted to share to help maybe identify if Sonny's actions are behavioural based.

Cheers,

Camo

does anyone know if I can access the site via my android phone and upload the video from there??

You can only link a video, you cannot upload one here.

Best bet for uploading is photobucket or youtube, then copy/paste the link here.

Correct~ at this time our profile albums only allow picture uploads, not videos.... So as suggested, you'll have to host the video elsewhere and post the link here.
