Whats it like to own an amazon?

Being owned by an amazon is unlike anything else.

No, they aren't cuddly birds. My DYH is sitting on the arm of the chair I'm sitting in right now and the most he'll let me do is scritch his head and he IS being cuddly. But there is something in the way an amazon purrs when you start rubbing their head that makes you just melt.

Temperamental? Oh yea they are! If they've had enough of you, they will not hesitate to let you know it. You are the inferior species and you will be corrected when you mess up. You will mess up.

At least I can trust my amazon to generally stay where I put him and only play with his things. He has a cage and usually that's where he goes at night, but he doesn't have to. I've spent the night away from home with him, and I can set up a perch, put him on it, and that's where he will stay for the night if I tell him it's bed time. He will stay on his play stand all day if i'm doing stuff around the house and play with his toys if that's where I put him. The only time he really tries to chew on anything that isn't his is if I am holding him and playing on my phone or doing something with my hands and then he wants to be involved.

He's independently dependent. He can sit and keep himself quietly entertained with his toys for hours, as long as he's close to me. Don't get me wrong, he's fine if I leave him home alone, but if I am home, he wants to be near me. He isn't like a cockatoo where he has to be on me all the time, he is content to just be in the same room. Or at least close enough that if he calls, he can hear me answer.

Overall he's pretty quiet. He talks and makes cute little noises. The only time he really gets loud is when he goes with me in the car. Then I crack the windows so he can feel the air moving (and I mean crack about an inch, nothing near enough that would allow an accidental escape), and turn the music up. Amazons love music!

I think there is no better bird than an amazon, but I may be a bit of an amazon snob. :D

I grew up with a YNA. I laugh at two things:
1. My father sitting us kids down for the annual DON'T GO NEAR HIS CAGE UNLESS YOU LIKE TO BLEED speech;
2. His (YNA) confidence.
Lettie, male YNA, was my first adoption (by inheritance) and oddly older than me.
I remember him singing "Happy Birthday" and laughing loudly. I also remember his screams and bites. I learned fast that alot has to do with the "owner."

They can be loud one second the quiet the next mean one second then sweet the next. In my experience, they are loving birds that know what they want and will get it at any cost! It was nice to have such a confident bird around, but when he decided he wanted something, he didn't mean five minutes from now. Lettie was a bird of extremes. He was the messiest, most destructive, most loving, most forgiving bird ever.

They are not cheap but like a child worth every penny!

Friend I invite you to take an evening and read Salty's 92 page life story. link below. He is not one of the Hot 3, so mellower then they are, just as talkative and smart. He is one of the family, truely so.
