My boyfriend and I bought an outdoor cage for our balcony yesterday. Loaded it with perches, and some toys. Well, the birds hated it in there. Beako has been outside before and didn't mind it, but when we put her in the cage outside and encouraged her to enjoy it, she held on to the bars of the cage and was really nervous. I offered her a treat she wouldn't take. She was so relieved to come back inside. Then we tried Kiwi - and she had a similar reaction but she kind of stood in place and looked nervous. I really wanted them to enjoy the outdoor cage for like 30minutes-1 hour a day, so they could catch some sunlight, fresh air, etc. Should I continue to take them out there a little bit each day? any other approaches? Thank you!

I asked a friend of mine about this. Her advice was put the parrot in the smaller cage she always goes out in and set that cage inside the bigger one. Open the smaller cage door and shut the larger cage door. The parrot will see she can get out, and still have the safety of the smaller cage. It should work until she gets use to the larger cage.

Outdoors is a scary place for a indoor pet parrot. Even my birds who go outside a lot will scan the surroundings when first coming out, and are quick to notice things like buzzards or airplanes. It will take your indoor birds awhile to adjust to being in the great outdoors. If they have a travel cage or some other that is small enough to carry outside ,use that until they are comfortable being in your outside enclosure.Sit with them and keep the sessions short.(10 minutes) Try and make it a happy time. Most of my birds prefer the AM and late afternoon when they can yell at the outside birds. Usually i only have to ask if they want to go outside and they get all excited.
